Emma-Jayne Wilson - Elected to the "Brampton Sports Hall of Fame"
By Brian R. Johnston
City of Brampton resident, Emma Jayne Wilson has broken another barrier for her gender, thanks to her tremendous abilities.
The "Brampton Sports Hall of Fame" will honour her, by inducting her as one of its newest members, in the Athletes Category for 2006 on May 31, 2006 during their awards night and banquet.
Her induction will be the first for her gender in the Horse Racing category.
She will join fellow members of the Horse Racing Industry, J. Elgin Armstrong of Armstrong Brothers Farms and Dr. Glen Brown, former Commissioner of the Ontario Racing Commission, who were previously inducted in the Builders category along with fellow jockey and Sovereign Award winning rider, Patrick Husbands, as only the fourth member of the Industry to be so recognized.
Emma Jayne was most humble, yet extremely proud that the City of Brampton, where she has lived all her life, has rec- ognized her enormous contribution to Sports as a world-class athlete in the Thoroughbred Industry.
Emma Jayne Wilson has always been active in sports, community and in the arts of her city and she spoke openly about her involvement.
"I was always an extremely active participant in Brampton's Parks and Recreation Programs, as I attended
Summer Camps where I experienced many sports such as; Field Hockey, Basketball, Cross- Country Running as well as Community Theatre", she said and "I also played Softball for 15 years in the C.G.M.S.A.".
It was in her first
year of High School,
that Rugby became
one of her passions as
she found the game to
be exhilarating and
most satisfying from a competitive standpoint and in the development of her personal growth.
She also discovered a passion for the Arts and was very prominent in Community Theatre playing numerous roles, in various productions, alongside her family and friends.
She was always enthralled with the Equine set and has been involved in the horse industry in some capacity since she was a mere child. It was as an 18 year old, that she attended a meeting of the Rotary Club where she met "Hall of Fame" rider, Sandy Hawley and knew immediately that she had not only the Horse Racing bug, but also the inner self-confidence to totally commit her to making the Horse Industry her chosen career.
Emma's success cannot be attributed to just a single decision. Everyday brings something new to challenge her and it is
through the many lessons learned that she is able to take the next step in order to positively progress in her quest to be the best.
Her parents support, their advice of keeping all the doors open, her commitment, her working relationship with her trusted agent and friend, Mike Luider and overall dedication are all
valuable pieces of the solid foundation from which, her accomplishments are being realized.
Physical strength and conditioning, Mental toughness, being a life long student and a belief in herself, allowed her to ride 1,132 races in 2005 where she won 180 races, while her runners amassed in excess of 6.3 million dollars in purse money.
She is the first of her gender, to have won the riding title at Woodbine Racetrack, in its 50 years of operation.
We must keep in mind that these statistics are only a portion of the work, devotion and reliability that she delivered throughout the year, in order to have been appropriately recognized by the Horse Racing Industry.
For those individuals that really aren't versed with first hand knowledge, Emma Jayne Wilson is pound for pound, on a par, with any world class athlete, in any sport
when it comes to strength and conditioning.
There needs to be recognition, that as an individual, she is far from being one-dimensional.
She is as dedicated as it comes, to the business side of the industry. Emma is extremely talented and capable of Marketing and the Promotion of both herself and the Racing Industry. Her work ethic is beyond reproach and she surrounds herself with positives, at all times. These are just some of the
other reasons that elevate her to the level she has attained.
The Sovereign Award garnished as Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in Canada and the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Rider in North America were earned in 2005 and her Election to the "Brampton Sports Hall of Fame" in May of 2006 is well deserved and timed appropriately.
Her election to the "Brampton Sports Hall of Fame" is an honour that she can always cherish.
Let us continue to share in the experience of her extra-ordinary skills and talents, as Emma Jayne Wilson strives to accomplish her goals and objectives of her chosen career, as a "World Class Rider".
Surely, we can all look forward to her future accomplishments within the Thoroughbred Racing Industry, wherever her career may take her on the World Stage.
Congratulations Emma-Jayne!!!

“Jake the Rake II”
The oldtimers at the race- track would remember the orig- inal “Jake the Rake” however John DiMarco Jr. has now inherited the name due to his impeccably raked shedrow at Ross Armata Jr.’s stable in barn 19 at Woodbine.
John DiMarco Jr., the son of Trainer John DiMarco, is a third generation horseman with his grandfather Frank DiMarco having trained horses at Woodbine along with John’s uncles Louie and Frank.
John Jr. says raking the shedrow after training hours is therapeutic and “good for the soul”.
