CORY & DAVID CLARK CONT. FROM PG.23
Rocco Latorre, a former rider himself, is similarly impressed with his client, the younger Clark.
“I’ve known for her years,” says Latorre, “She’s a workaholic. I rode with David for many years and I used to call him ToughastheycomeDavid and Cory is the same way. A few weeks ago she had a spill and she still had two more rides to go and I’m assuming she’d book off, but she got back on again and she got a second and a win on the remainder of the card.”
Father and daughter have ridden in the same race many times. When each had mounts in the 2003 Prince of Wales Stakes, it marked the first time a father and daughter had ridden in a Canadian Triple Crown event. David finished 3rd with Shoal Water; Cory was 6th aboard Sonofawac. No father-daughter combo has ever ridden in an American Triple Crown race.
Dad says when they’re in a race together, Cory is just one of the other riders.
“Everybody has to take care of each other,” he says seriously. “You try not to put anybody in a bad situation.”
Cory is a little bit more revealing of how she might feel when riding in the same race as her Dad.
“I might not specifically pick him out, unless I’m last,” she says, “Then I’ll look to see if he’s winning. If I can’t win, I’d like him to.”
One area in which the older Clark has more experience is in the mending of bones. He had a dreadful accident in 2002, at the age of 48.
“A horse fell on me and I broke 26 ribs and punctured both lungs and broke the collarbone. I think it happened in August and I came back in October.”
That’s a veteran jock for you. Ten weeks off with injuries that would keep the rest of us in bed for a year. Cory has had a few falls, but so far has avoided anything catastrophic.
Some children resent taking advice from their parents, but Cory knows that her Dad has valuable experience to pass on. How many jockeys can boast that their father has won two Queen’s Plates? David was aboard Fiddle Dancer Boy in 1981 and La Lorgnette in 1985.
On a daily basis at the Fort, Cory has the chance to be proud of her Dad.
“In the jock’s room, I’ll be coming back after riding,” she says in her most animated voice, “And someone will shout at me ‘hey your Dad just won one at Woodbine!’ ”
And apparently Cory is quite capable of rubbing it in Dad’s face when she has the better day at the track.
“Many times Cory makes the odd little comment,” says David ruefully.
Actually Cory is more specific on this count.
“I just call him up and say who’s the hotshot?” she laughs.
