THE JOCKS ROOM:TAILOR-MADE FOR SUCCESS
By Chris Lomon
Robin Olguin hasn't set up shop yet, but the world is already knocking at her door.
Robin, wife of Woodbine-based jockey Gerry Olguin, has to like her odds when it comes to the probability of success of The Jocks Room, a company her and her husband are co-owners in.
The reason for her optimism when it comes to their thoroughbred custom racing and
training equipment company?
Demand is already running neck-
and-neck with supply.
At a recent trade show in
Philadelphia, where the latest equine products from around the world were on display, Robin had the chance to meet with various suppliers from the United States and Europe.
It was well worth the trip.
"It was a great opportunity in terms of helping me achieve my goal, which is to bring the best racing equipment available to Toronto," said Robin, who herself is a former jockey previously competing at Hastings in Vancouver for four years.
"We got fantastic response from the people we spoke with. A gentleman from Australia was interested in finding more about us and in doing business with us. That tells me we're doing some- thing right."
For the past year, Olguin has supplied tack and clothing to the jockeys that compete at two of Canada's most prominent race- tracks, Woodbine and Fort Erie, a service that was previously unavailable to the riders.
Though her stake in the company began in the spring of 2004, Olguin is now on the fast track to increasing the profile of The Jocks Room, including her desire to open a facility on the Woodbine backstretch.
Buoyed by the support of numerous Toronto oval horse- men, Olguin is hoping to get the green light prior to April 16, opening day of the 2005 Thoroughbred season at Canada's Showplace of Racing.
"I've been dealing with Stephen Koch, the Director of Backstretch Operations, regarding opening a retail space on the backside," said Olguin.
"The space available is limited, but Stephen has been very helpful and I'll know more closer to the start of the Thoroughbred meet."
The store would stock ready- to-wear items for exercise riders, jockeys and trainers, including jockey pants and jackets, embroidered turtlenecks, rain suits and exercise boots, along with a collection of samples and materials for tailor-made orders
such as exercise saddles and whips.
The Jocks Room is also the only business to offer Bob
Roberts custom racing and exercise saddles. Roberts, one of a very limited number of custom jockey and exercise saddle makers in North America, is one of the most respected names in the business.
"The riders at Woodbine have been using Bob's
saddles for quite a while and I'm looking forward to offering his custom exercise saddles and racing bridles to the trainers."
Personalizing the merchandise, says, Olguin, is a focal point for the company, an approach that has been key in building relationships with her clientele base.
