THE SCRIBE - CONT. FROM PREVIOS PG.
His mount was brought down by a faller and Ireland's top jockey plunged to the ground breaking his right wrist. He will now miss the ride on star performer Azamour in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown in two weeks time but hopes to be back in action to ride at Longchamp's Arc meeting where he will partner either the Irish colt or the Italian star Electrocutionist. The other rider involved in the accident Fran Berry broke his sternum and received a severe neck injury and will be out of action for some time.
Aidan O'Brien's George Washington is one of the highest rated juveniles of recent years just halfway through the season and the Ballydoyle handler has another smart youngster in his care named Horatio Nelson. This colt won the grade 2 Futurity Stakes at the Curragh but stable companion Ivan Denisovich found the soft going at Deauville unsuitable when second to Silca's Sister in the Prix Morny.
English trainer Mick Channon saddled the winner and she is one of the leading fancies for next year's 1,000 Guineas with her stable mate Flashy Wings the current ante post favourite. French star New Girlfriend suffered her first defeat in this race and was clearly ill at ease on the going. Kieren Fallon who has ridden in many countries remarked "the Deauville ground is the worst I have ridden on any- where in the world".
Luas Line, fourth in the American Oaks, has since recorded two listed race wins back in Ireland and now her trainer David Wachman has the Garden City Breeders Cup at Belmont lined up for this decent filly.
September 2005:
Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien is considering running Yeats in the Canadian International following the colt's fourth place finish in the Irish St. Leger and he may be joined by the Dermot Weld trained 2004 Irish Derby winner Grey Swallow which would be ridden by Pat Smullen.
Smullen (brother of Sean) is also expected to partner Saoire for his wife Frances Crowley in the E.P.Taylor Stakes . This filly won the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh.
Italian colt Electrocutionist showed his class when successful in a competitive grade one race in England and could also join the line up for the International in which case we would get another opportunity to witness Kinane , who partnered him to his last victory in action at Woodbine.
Did You Know.....
That 5-year-old Frankiefourfingers has been retired
and is working as a pony at Fort Erie Racetrack. Trainer Ed Freeman lost Frankiefourfingers in a claim but claimed him back and promptly retired him. He is now in the hands of exercise rider Dara Hanriahan and goes out six times a day to pony horses and is “as happy as can be.”
