Emma-Jayne Poised to Win Title
With only ten racing days left to the 2005 Woodbine season (at press time), it is very likely that the Apprentice Jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson will be crowed Leading Rider at Woodbine for 2005.
As of November 27, Emma-Jayne has a commendable lead with 162 wins and $6,870,419 in purses over Jockey Corey Fraser in second with 130 wins and $5,848, 429.
Rounding out the top five at Woodbine are: Patrick Husbands 648- 112-103-104 $6,372,830; James McAleney 629-107-104-81 $6,478,991 and Todd Kabel 534-99-76-69 $6,494,959.
Sid Attard has to Hang On
Trainer Sid Attard is looking for a repeat of last year when he earned Leading Trainer honours at Woodbine. He has a very good chance of a repeat however his rivals aren’t making it easy for him. In a flurry of 6 wins in six days of racing including 3 stakes wins, trainer Mark Casse is only 7 wins away from taking top position. Robert Tiller has 52 wins, Reade Baker with 51 and Scott Fairlie with 47. And as everyone knows anything can happen in ten days of racing.
To recap:
The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Ontario Division) Board of Directors invited their current membership roster of 491 members to an information meeting on October 11, 2005 during which two proposals were being presented to ultimately determine the location of future CTHS Sales venues in Ontario.
Held in the existing Sales Pavilion at Woodbine Racetrack, the evening meeting was attended by more than 100 people, 77 of which were CTHS (Ontario) members who registered before the start of the presentations.
The Board of Directors had felt it necessary to call the meeting due to the importance of the outcome of the decision along with the divided views of the Directors themselves on which was the best for the future of selling thoroughbreds in Ontario.
A month later the CTHS Directors are still divided in what now looks to some to be a battle of the wills as opposed to deciding what is best for the future of thoroughbred sales in Ontario.
In late 2003, the CTHS of Ontario were given control of selling thoroughbreds in Ontario with the condition that they have to find a new venue for their Yearling and Mixed Sales by the year 2006. This gave the CTHS Board of Directors the task of finding a new home in as little as two years. Extensive searches of existing venues as well as available properties for sale bared little fruit until early in 2005 when a possible site in Guelph became available. The site, which comes with a hefty price tag, was being considered.
At the same time the Board had also approached Woodbine Entertainment Group with a proposal to
keep the Sales at Woodbine and after considerable negotiation, a proposal which suited both parties was finalized. The sales could remain at Woodbine and the CTHS and WEG would combine funds to build two additional barns.
However the Board remained divided on which way to proceed.
The two proposals were presented in the meeting on October 11 followed by a question and answer session which revealed some of the pro’s and con’s of each proposal.
The Board of Directors of the CTHS of Ontario are planning to let their membership make this very important decision by an audited vote through a mail-in ballot which was sent to members on November 25, 2005.
The future of thoroughbred sales in Ontario rests on this important vote by the members and it is in everyone’s best interest that members be informed about each proposal before casting their ballots.
The CTHS of Ontario have also mailed out information packages to all of their members which will include the details of each proposal. A Video or DVD copy of the entire meeting is also available to all members by request.
You are strongly encouraged to make sure you are informed before voting. Ask questions and make sure you now the complete facts of each proposal. It can’t be stressed enough that the result of the voting will have a terrific impact on the future of the thoroughbred sales in Ontario.
