Apprentice Rainford Loves to Win
Apprentice Jockey Michelle Rainford with the Scott Fairlie trained Embattle at Woodbine.
Woodbine’s newest apprentice jockey, Michelle Rainford, is hoping for big things to happen after coming a long way in a short time on the racetrack.
Born in Fergus, Ontario, Michelle grew up riding horses. In a variety of disciplines, she competed all through highschool and enjoyed travelling to far off places as a member of Canada’s Mounted Games Team.
To make ends meet, Michelle was a waitress...an unhappy one at that. Everything changed for Michelle four years ago when veterinarian Liz Pathak suggested to her that she should gallop horses at Woodbine.
Michelle began with trainer Alec Fehr for a season and then ventured to Florida for the winter months where she worked for a New York based stable as well as freelancing at Classic Mile. She returned to Woodbine and
began working for trainer Scott Fairlie.
Michelle hadn’t imagined becoming a jockey. According to her, everyone had just assumed that is what she wanted to be because of her small stature. It wasn’t until this year that Michelle decided that it seemed like the right decision, “I figured if I never did it, I’d regret it.” said Michelle about her new career. “I wanted to be involved in racing.”
Michelle is also working on a double major in English and History at the University of Guelph in preparation for
attending Teacher’s College and eventually one day becoming a teacher.
Michelle had her first mount as an apprentice on Wednesday, October 29 and has since won two races aboard the Scott Fairlie trained and owned, Tracy’s Tonka Toy on november 12, and Embattle on November 27.
She hopes to win two more races before the Woodbine season ends and return in the spring to get her fifth win to start her one year apprenticeship.
This winter Michelle will likely return to waitressing for a few months and keep fit by galloping at area farms.
“I am very competitive and I love to win.” says Michelle, “I am looking forward to being a part of a winning team.”
