Road’s End Stallions have a lot to Offer
For Jack Bennett, horses have provided him with a way of life for the past 30 years and they are the reason he gets up every morning.
Originally from Dauphin, Manitoba, Jack moved west to British Columbia with the RCMP in 1966 after fulfilling a lifelong goal of becoming an officer.
In 1979 Jack began working with horses as a hobby and a year later his hobby became his occupation when he gave up his position with the RCMP and began working at Alfred Tsang’s Tri Star Farms.
Tri Star Farms was home to stallions Wanderkind and Taylor and David Forster was the racetrack and farm trainer with Dr. Karl Chan looking after the well being of the horses. After fifteen years, Jack, who eventually became the farm and stallion manager, inherited the business in 1995 when Alfred Tsang was looking to get out of the thoroughbred industry.
Today, Jack Bennett and Pat, his wife of 30 years, continue to turn out quality thoroughbreds under the name, Road’s End Farm.
Road’s End Farm’s stallion roster currently includes long-time stallion Alfaari, who stands with 4 relative newcomers; Amaruk, Orchid’s Devil, Dramatic Show and Recreation.
The soon to be seventeen year old stallion, Alfaari, has produced consistent and successful runners over the years. Some of Alfaari’s most recent stars include:
Kalfaari, winner of 8 stakes races including 4 stakes wins in his 6 year old campaign in 2003. He passed away in Winnipeg in 2004 at age 7 with $232,964 in earnings.
Rampaging Alf, winner of 4 stakes races and earnings of $214,839 before retiring at age 7 in 2004.
Alfurune raced until age 6 with earnings of $210,247 which included a stakes win and multiple stakes placings. Other stakes winners include, Jamaari Girl ($119,315); Danzilation ($113,607); and 2005 Klondike Handicap
winner, Hall Dancer ($63,654).
Sonofawac was multiple stakes placed at Woodbine
with earnings of $186,878; Native Judge was stakes placed twice with earnings of $97,657 along with Halo Alfaari who placed third in the Ontario Lassie Stakes.
Alfaari’s progeny are consistent earners and there are more than a handful of horses who have earned more than $100,000 “the hard way” in their careers:
Mayneunderfire who raced from age 3 to 6 with earnings of more than $170,000; Bird of Courage earned $141,827 racing from age 2 to 7; Alfaari’s Solo was a winner of more than $122,000 from age 2 to 6; and Alferrari had his best year in 2005 at age 6 placing in 10 of his 14 starts which included 4 wins. He has earned more than $114,344 thus far.
Alfaari’s progeny have earned close to $4.3 million with an average earnings per starter of $32,571.
Orchid’s Devil is an unraced son of Forty Niner, out of the highly successful stakes winning mare Devil’s Orchid, who is also the mare of unraced stallion Recreation. Both sons are standing at Road’s End and offer exceptional pedigree.
Owned by the Yates Family of Vancouver, Devil’s Orchid raced in the U.S. before retiring to the breeding shed in Ontario in 1993 with a record of 5 stakes wins, and 8 stakes places with accumulated earn- ings of more than $600,000. She is the dam of Mountain Orchid ($233,698) who won the Apelia Stakes and was second in the Jammed Lovely at
Woodbine in 2002.
Her most recent offspring is 2-year-old stakes
winner, Unification, by Dixie Union, winner of the 2005 Grade 3, Grey Breeders’ Cup Stakes at Woodbine. He is currently 2 for 2 lifetime with earnings of $171,307. Unification was originally
sold by the Yates’ as a yearling at Keeneland for $125,000 and he was re-sold to the current owners at age 2 for $750,000.
Orchid’s Devil has been at Road’s End Farm for two seasons and is represented by 5 very limited foal crops. He has already produced Stakes winner, Backseat Becka ($134,681, who won the 2004 CTHS Sales Stakes and the BC Cup Debutante and was stakes placed in 2005. Columbia Moon had 4 wins in 4 starts and was the recent winner of the Hastings Speed Handicap, crossing the wire in just under the current track record. Woodbine winner Singing Devil is stakes placed and has earnings of $202,051 thus far and Mark of Diablo is a stakes winner as well.
Recreation's first foals are expected in 2006.
Thirteen-year-old stallion Amaruk, by Wolf Power(SAF) - Falmouth Bay, is also represented by a very limited number of foals who have done quite well. His most successful offspring is Five Point Star, who was the winner of the 2005 Herald Gold Plate Handicap at Stampede Park and is multiple stakes placed this year at Hastings. He was the winner of the 2004 Hastings Speed Handicap and the BC Sprint and currently has career earnings of $196,103.
April Foolish is a winner of $122,474 in her career thus far with an impressive race record of 7 wins, 3 seconds and 2 thirds in 19 starts which includes a third in the Cover Girl Handicap at Hastings last season.
Amaruk’s average earnings per starter is $43,584.
Dramatic Show is the newest member to the roster at Road’s End Farm with his first foals becoming 2-year-olds in 2006. He is a good-looking son of Triple Crown Winner Seattle Slew out of the mare American Drama. His first crop of yearlings received rave reviews at the sale this season. Dramatic Show is a half brother to millionaire Dramatic Gold, a multiple Graded Stakes Winner of more than $2.5 million.
He will be represented by a small crop of foals in 2006 however big things are expected from this stallion.
