Then there is the old quick method of serious reducing called treating your self to a Saran Wrap. A rider in California packaged himself up like a sandwich and would go and play a couple of rounds of golf. During the round he would run from hole to hole working up quite a sweat. This jockey soon found himself playing many rounds of golf on his own.
If there is one classic story of how much dedication and determination certain jockeys will endure to continue riding, it would have to be the peanut story.
One of the most respected jockeys is Laffit Pincay Jr., whose dedication to weight loss is unparalleled by his peers. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas tells this story: "While sitting in first class, a flight attendant asks if Pincay or I wanted anything to eat. Pincay asked for one peanut. He split the nut in two, then ate it."
This column shows what jockeys are determined to do to continue doing what they love best - riding horses. For every jockey who ever shed a pound to ride a horse, here’s hoping this brings back some pleasant memories.

Sweet Catomine Retired after Controversy
Bettor Arthur Mota, filed a lawsuit seeking unspecified damages for alleged fraud on the parts of owner- breeder Marty Wygod, trainer Julio Canani, Santa Anita Park and others associated with Sweet Catomine, for not disclosing the filly’s health problems before running in the Santa Anita Derby on April 9.
Sweet Catomine was undefeated in her last five starts going into the race. She finished fifth in the race and an investigation by the California Horse Racing Board following the race found that the filly, who had bled during her last work before the race, was transported from the stable area to receive medical treatment five days earlier, and at the time was falsely identified as a “pony” to the stable gate guard.
Owner Wygod was cleared of any wrong doing by the California Racing Stewards who, after a three- hour hearing, determined that the evidence did not substantiate the charges that Wygod violated the rules of racing, or that his conduct was detrimental to the sport.
Reportedly, Sweet Catomine has since been retired “sound” and will be bred to A.P. Indy this season. She goes to the breeding shed with a record of 7-5-1-0 and earnings of $1,059,600.
