10 BEST PLAYING TIPS - CONT. FROM PAGE 16
6) Advance Bet the Late Daily Double:
Not only is this part of a superior money management concept, it means if you tap out early you'll still have a chance to score in the final race. I can't tell you how many times I was empty before the last two races, but hit the late double and left with $300 (well ok - once).
7) Don't Buy Tip Sheets Outside the Track:
If these guys really knew who was going to win, do you think they would go to all that trouble to make, what, $20-$30?
8) Hot Jockeys Cold Jockeys:
At every meet, there's one jockey who gets on a roll. He starts to win, trainers and owners notice, he gets better horses, his confidence flows into his mounts and, it seems, he wins once or twice a day. At Woodbine, just about every fall, one apprentice jockey lights up the board. This year it was Corey Fraser. Here's his winning prices from a two week span in late November: $6.80, 30.90,
7.30, 8.80, 3.40, 5.20, 6.70, 3.50, 13.20, 20.90, 6.90, 6.30, 13.40, 10.90, 6.60, 21.00. By the same token, don't waste your time and money when you see a jockey who wins about every time Kahoutek's Comet flies by. The jockey whose record shows 2 wins out of 50 mounts is wallowing in his own per- sonal hell. Don't make it yours.
9) Last Race Hangers:
This will sound strange, but if you see the word hung or flattened in the description of a horse's last race, take a shot, especially if the horse hung or flattened after challenging for the lead. Although hung/flattened sug- gests the horse ran poorly, to me it means he just didn't run a full race and very often the horse's best race comes after one in which he hung or flattened.
10) And the 10th and final Best Horse Playing Tip You Will Ever Get: Never Use a Credit Card for a Cash Advance at the Track. (Actually this isn't my tip - it's your mother's!)
