Horses of Racing Age Sale (BC)
BC’s 2004 Thoroughbred Racing Industry Awards
An auction of race horses jointly conducted by the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (CTHS), the Horseman's Benevolent and Protective Agency (HPBA) and Great Canadian Gaming Corporation (GCGC) was held on Tuesday April 19 at Hastings Racecourse.
More than 250 people attended this special auction where twenty horses from across North America were procured by a bloodstock agent and then presented for auction at Hastings Racecourse.
The sale topper ($67,000) was R. Associate, a five year old colt who last raced at Gulfstream Park in
Florida. There was a range of horses available for every level of buyer from under $10,000 to the topper at $67,000.
Chuck Keeling, Vice President of Racing Operations said “These twenty horses should contribute to the long term health of BC breeding after their racing careers, as sires and broodmares.” Keeling continued: “This auction most importantly demonstrates that Great Canadian is serious about rejuvenating horseracing in BC and that the partnership with the CTHS and the HPBA is solid and important.”
BC’s 2004 Horse of the Year, Lord Nelson,
winning the George Royal Stakes
on May 2, 2004. He came back off that win three weeks later to score again in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Sprint on May 23.
