After sitting out the first three days of racing of the 2005 season at Woodbine due to suspension, Apprentice Jockey Emma Jayne Wilson, did not waste any time getting to the winners circle in 2005. Emma recorded her first win of the season aboard her second mount on April 24.
Emma began her apprentice career in August 2004, recording her first career win on her second
mount aboard the Stephen Edwards trained Ali Olah at Fort Erie on August 28. It didn’t take her long to get another three wins at Woodbine forcing her to temporarily hang up her tack for the remain- der of the season to save her bug status for 2005.
Emma, who spent the winter months in New Orleans, rode like a seasoned veteran in her 2005 debut.
During the stretch of the second race, Emma had a ton of horse and was flying up the inside rail aboard the Laurie Silvera owned and trained, Bold Clover, when she was checked while attempting to pass the leader, Uncanny Judith. In an impressive move, she angled Bold Clover to the outside of Uncanny Judith and was able to come on again for the win.
The win gave Emma her fifth career win, thus starting her one year apprenticeship and adding five pounds to her allowance.
Emma quickly recorded another win that day, which was just as impressive. Another rail skimming run in the fifth race gave Emma the win aboard the Six Brother Stable’s Talk to Me Baby, for trainer William Tharrenos. It was the fifth consecu- tive win for the 4-year-old filly by Bold Executive.

Soaring Free Wins in 2005 Debut
Soaring Free, Canada’s reigning Horse of the Year, defended his Shakertown Stakes title at Keeneland on April 16 with a determined win going 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf for a purse of $113,300US in the Grade 3 event. He became the first two-time winner of the nine-year-old event.
Trainer Mark Frostad said the Sam-Son Farm homebred 6-year-old gelding by Smart Strike will campaign towards the Atto Mile in September and the Breeders’ Cup Mile, the same gameplan as the past two seasons. Soaring Free was the winner of the 2004 Gr. 1 Atto Mile and finished fourth in the BC (turf) Mile.
Pat Day surgery successful
Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day began rehabilitation in Colorado a few days after a successful surgery on his right hip on March 30.
The cartilage damage lining his hip joint was more extensive than originally believed and the 51-year- old jockey was in rehab until April 9 before returning to his home in Louisville Kentucky.
Pat Day, who has ridden in 21 consecutive Kentucky Derbies, says he is not going to push his recovery to ride in this year’s Derby on May 7. According to his agent, Day has the call on Noble Causeway but has stated that he is not going to take two steps back (in his recovery) to take one step forward.
Pat Day has 8,780 career victories (fourth on racing’s all-time win list) and won the Kentucky Derby in 1992 aboard Lil E. Tee.
