Nick Andrews has been breeding racehorses for 41 years and as a self proclaimed small breeder, he has had his share of good fortune this
$500,000 in his career. “I don’t campaign many of my horses,” said Nick when asked about keeping Hot Pepper Hill, “I can’t remember why I didn’t sell him.”
Close to a decade later, Nick acquired the mare Touch Your Toes in a private sale. She would prove to be a very productive mare providing him with pro table offspring and some runners of his own. Nick currently has three generations at his farm in Newmarket and is looking forward to Touch Your Toes’ granddaughter
running at Wood-
bine this season.

past decade thanks to his mare, Touch Your Toes (Le Fabuleux - Star Of The Stage, by The Minstrel).
Hot Pepper Hill is now enjoying his retirement as a hacking horse at the farm of Nick’s daughter Shelley.
Nick was always interested in horses and began breeding in the late 60’s which led to racing and then owning stallions.
Touch Your Toes’ 1997 foal, Touch of Power (War Deputy), was sold as a yearling, and was a multiple stakes winner at Great Lakes Downs for his owners.
Newmarket Stud was formed in 1970 with Nick and two business associates from the car dealership, Addison On Bay, where he was an executive.
Another of Nick’s own runners out of Touch Your Toes was her 1999 foal, El Habanero (Whiskey Wisdom). He was RNA at the local yearling sale and went on to win more than $260,000 under Mac Benson.
The owner’s son, Harry Addison Jr. and the General Manager Ron Edgar and Nick were equal partners in the operation.

(above left to right) Owner Nick Andrews with 24-year-old retired mare, Touch Your Toes, Ericka Rusnak with Touch Your Toes’ daughter Shannon River (in foal to Toccet) and Nick’s daughter Shelley Stacey with Shannon River’s 3-year-old daughter, Shannon’s Limerick.
Ron Edgar was already involved in the racing business having campaigned Champion Rainbow Connection before she went on to be a brilliant broodmare for purchasers Sam-Son Farms.
In 2001, Touch Your Toes, was nominated for Outstanding Broodmare, the same year as eventual winner, Dance Smartly.
For the next 12 years Newmarket Stud stood stallions: Hawaii V Oh who was unraced while having been trained by Lucien Laurin for owner Ed Whitiker; Lord Vancouver, who was a winner of more than $240,000 including a prestigious win in the Pan Am Stakes in Florida under trainer Frank Merrill; Kinsman Hope, ran the fastest mile in 1970 while racing for Hobeau Farms under conditioner Allen Jerkens. He was purchased by Newmarket Stud and stood for a syndicate consisting of Sam Young, Ivan Thrasher and Stan Sobel for $7500, which was a substantial fee at the time; Glos-
Evanthia (Cape Town) 2002 was unraced after being sold at the sales. She is now a broodmare for Kelynack Stables.
sary won the inaugural running of the Secretariat Stakes in Chicago for owner Maxwell Gluck before standing for a syndicate at Newmarket; and Victorian Prince, who earned $365,000 for owners Bob Besley and Michael Clay stood at Newmarket as well.
Shannon River’s three-year-old lly, Shannon’s Limerick (Black Minaloush), who was a buy-back at the Yearling Sale at Keeneland will be racing for Nick’s Cedarow Farms at Woodbine this year with trainer Mac Benson.
Daisy Doolittle’s, most recent offspring, Daisy Blue, broke her maiden last fall in Allowance company at Woodbine for her owners under trainer Sid Attard and with plenty of hope for Shannon’s Limerick this year, it appears that the foundation has been laid for continued success for Nick Andrews and his Cedarow Farms.
Newmarket Stud was disbanded in 1982 after the breeding business “took a bad turn”.
Other notable racehorses produced by Touch
Your Toes include her 1996 foal, Hot Pepper
Shelley & Nick with 24-year-old mare Touch Your Toes
Touch Your Toes’ last foal (2004), Chestnut Touch (Tactical Cat) was sold at Keeneland for $130,000 and nished 5th by 2 1/4 lengths at the wire in his rst start in mid-February this year.
Shannon River (Let’s Go Blue), sold as a yearling and was a winner at the track under trainer Ross Armata. She was bred to Broken Vow upon her retirement from racing and Nick purchased her back in foal out of the Keeneland Sale.
After her retirement from Broodmare duty in 2004 Touch Your Toes’ two daughters Daisy Doolittle and Shannon River are now left to carry on where their mother left off.
