8 The Game, November 2007 Hastings Stakes Recap
By Jim Reynolds
Vancouver, B.C. (October 2007) The fall stakes program at Hastings Racecourse offers the best and most lucrative racing of the year. Included in the list of blue-ribbon events are the $100,000 Jack and Sa- die Diamond Futurities, The Fantasy Stakes and As- cot Graduation for two year olds, the $250,000 G111 BC Derby and G111 $125,000 BC Oaks for three year olds, the $100,000 Ballerina for older llies and mares and the $100,000 Premiers for three and up colts and geldings, plus seven $50,000 added events for horses in all three age groups. This fall the weath- er was warm, the track good and the horses at peak condition. The horses, trainers and owners put on a great show and a couple of out of town jockeys Gerry Olguin, Alan Cuthbertson, Quincy and Welch added spice to the mix. Here is a recap of the fall stakes to date.
September 1, Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes: Labour Day weekend offered three good races. On Saturday Alpine Garden won the $50,000 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes for three-year-old llies. Recently purchased by Bob Cheema and trained by Terry Jordan, Alpine Garden has won three in a row for her new connections. Alpine Garden is by Lemon
September 2, Richmond Derby Trial: With the defending Grey Cup champion BC Lions in attendance, the 43rd running of the $50,000 Richmond Derby Trial was won by Glenn Todd and Patrick Kinsella’s good colt Sir Gallovic. Sir Gallovic’s win brought his earnings to more than $74,000 and his connections are hopeful that it will be enough to gain entry in the $250,000 Breeders’ Cup BC Derby on Sept.23.
September 3, SW Randall Plate: On Labour Day one of British Columbia’s oldest races, the $50,000 SW Randall Plate, ( rst ran
in 1948) was won by

September 7, CTHS Sales Stakes ( llies division): British Columbia breeders enjoyed their annual pat-on-the back weekend with the CTHS Sales Stakes (for two year olds foaled in BC) run in two divisions, colts and llies, each with $60,000 up for grabs. In the lly division Dancing Allstar easily won by 10 lengths under a hand ride by jockey Mario Gutierrez.
September 8, CTHS Sales Stakes (colts division): In what proved to be a good weekend for Bob Cheema and trainer Terry Jordan, their other good two year old Star Prospector scored his third consecutive stakes victory in Sunday’s $60,000 CTHS Sales Stakes for 2-year-old colts and geldings. Since claimed by Jordon on behalf of Cheema in July, Star Prospector has won the BC Cup Nursery Stakes Aug. 6 and the New Westminster Stakes on Aug. 26. Star Prospector is by Millennium Allstar.
September 22, BC Breeders’ Cup Oaks (G111): The mile and 1/8 Oaks, for three year old llies with a purse of $136,720 was won by Bob Cheema’s Alpine Garden. Under Alberta riding star Quincy Welch, the lly by Lemon Drop Kid covered the 1 1/8-miles distance in 1:52.1/5 and dominated the eld of sophomore llies by 1 2/4 lengths. The victory brings her lifetime winnings to $202,358 after four straight wins for trainer Terry Jordan.
September 22, Delta Colleen Stakes: Perhaps the best mare to set foot on the Hastings oval since Delta Colleen, the Kentucky bred mare Monashee won the $50,000 Delta Colleen in spite of a post weight of 130 pounds. Jockey Dave Wilson never had to use his whip as the big grey mare gained the lead on the back- stretch and drew 1 3⁄4 lengths clear of second place nisher Lady Raj in a time of 1:45.2/5 . Monashee is by Wolf Power out of Avide by Wall Street Dancer.

unsuccessful at winning this prestigious race un- til now. Trained by Rafael Becerra, Celtic Dreamin and ridden by Woodbine jockey Gerry Olguin, who won the Derby in 1989 aboard Fleet Reserve, Celtic Dreamin ran the 1 1/8th in a respectable 1:49.2/5 with Gandolf second and Sir Gallovic third. Two year old champion Ookashada was fth.
Thanksgiving Day weekend two of Brit- ish Columbia’s richest two-year-old events highlighted racing in the province with two $100,000 added juvenile events; the Jack Diamond Futurity for BC bred colts and the Sadie Diamond Futurity for BC bred llies.
October 7, The Sadie Diamond Futurity: Two year old lly sensation Dancing Allstar set a track record for two year olds in the Sadie Diamond. Trained by Terry Jordan she covered the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15:3/5 and made it look easy in spite of jockey Mario Gutierrez’ instructions not to let her go too fast. The Millennium Allstar lly was purchased by Bob Cheema for $15,500 at last year’s CTHS year- ling sale.

October 8, The Jack Diamond Futurity: This year’s premium two year old race for BC home-grown colts and geldings was won convincingly by Desert Alf, a half brother to last year’s BC bred champion Spaghetti Mouse. Desert Alf ran the six and one half furlongs in a respectable 1:18:3 under jockey Frank Fuentes. Breaking last he was allowed to settle on the rail before moving ve wide

October 13, The Ballerina: Time will tell if Mo- nashee is the real deal when she leaves BC to try tough- er competition in Ontario and California but for now she’s queen of her realm here in BC. The 5-year-old Wolf Power mare romped to her 11th straight Stakes win in the G111 added Ballerina Stakes. Monashee did as she has done all year by simply demol-
The word Celtic, except to Bostonians, is pronounced with a ‘K’ sound as in K.K. Sangara who claimed Celtic Dreamin for $40,000 at Santa Ani- ta this spring. But no matter how you pronounce it Celtic Dreamin is in the history books with his vic- tory in the 2007 1 1/8th BC Derby. The race car- ried a purse of $263,780 with a little over $158,000 going to Sangara’s racing piggy bank. Although one of BC’s most prominent owners Sangara had been
An interesting addition to this race was the presence of Alan Cuthbertson (above) Canada’s oldest jockey who set a record on the prairies this season with 106 wins
ishing her foes over the 1 1/8th mile distance without any apparent effort on her part. This time she broke sharply, took the lead and was never pressed. With only four horses to contend for the purse totalling $147,000 there was only win betting on the race. Monashee paid $2.10. Once again Lady Raj was second and Slewpast third with Alberta invader Selita’s Dream nishing fourth.
