of weight, a sub-par ride and the loss of a shoe to narrowly miss victory in the Premiers Handicap. Spotting Rich- mond Derby winner Sir Gall- ovic 13 pounds the big geld- ing was held in check until the stretch and red gamely to nish a neck back of the winner in a time of 2:15:4 for the mile and 3/8th. Sir Gall- ovic, who had to overcome his own share of adversity in the BC Derby received an excellent ride from Hastings Park’s leading rider Ma- rio Gutierrez, stalking the pace and moving forward on the nal turn to lead by a length into the stretch and driving at the wire to win The Premiers for lead- ing trainer Troy Taylor and owners Glen Todd and Pat- rick Kinsella. Newton John who started the year in the claiming ranks winning ve of ten to earn his spot in the big race nished third after leading until the stretch run.
Trivia question: When did the last sire of a Derby winner go on to sire a dam of a Derby winner?
This year’s BC Derby was won by Celtic Dream- in, a California-bred with a strong B.C. connection. His dam, Astral Dreamer, is a full sister to 1995 BC Derby winner Flying Sauce bred by BC breeders Jim and Heather Blackmore of Leys Farm near Victoria, BC. The Blackmore’s owned a mare called L’Astragale by Flying Paster and bred her to their stallion On the Sauce produc- ing Flying Sauce. Vancou- ver trainer Sid Martin, who trained Flying Sauce bought Astral Dreamer for his client California racehorse owner and breeder Marshall Naify (CEO of United Artists Stu- dios). When Mr. Naify died in 2000 his daughter Marsha inherited Astral Dreamer and bred her producing Celt- ic Dreamin. “Celtic Dream- ing.” said Jim Blackmore, “reminds me a lot of On The Sauce.” On the Sauce died this year in Los Angeles.
Cloudy’s Knight shines in Pattison Canadian International
S J Stables’ homebred Cloudy’s Knight showed what a game, gutsy competitor he is by winning the $2 million Pattison Canadian International, Canada richest horse race, on Sunday, October 21 at Woodbine.
tucky-bred gelded son of Lord Avie, was winning his second straight race at Woodbine, after scoring in the Sky Classic September 23, defeating some of his Pattison rivals in the process. It was his 10th win in 32 career starts, but far and away his biggest and his rst Group 1 victory.
Ridden brilliantly by Ramsey Zimmerman, Cloudy’s Knight, sent postward an 18-1 outsider, took over around the eighth-pole from Sunriver, opened a length on his 11 rivals, then held off Britain’s 5-2 favourite Ask in a furious drive to the wire, hanging on to win the Grade 1, mile and one-half turf classic, by a diminishing nose.
Kirby indicated that plans are to bring Cloudy’s Knight back again to the races next year as an eight-year-old. “We’ll plan a big campaign for him if everything’s good,” he said.
German-bred Quijano, the 7-2 third choice, wound up third, just one length further back and a neck in front of fourth-place nisher Stream of Gold. The nal time, over a rm E.P. Taylor Turf Course, was 2:27.71.
Cloudy’s Knight, a career earner of over $830,000 coming into the Pattison, picked up a cheque for $1.2 million for the win in his nal race of the 2007 season, as he crossed the $2 million threshold in earnings.
