The Ontario Racing Commission approved the race calendar for the 2009 thoroughbred season at Woodbine.
Mario Gutierrez successfully defended his riding title with a total of 103 wins and $1,580,274 in earnings in 2008.
Woodbine has been approved for 167 race days with racing beginning on Saturday, April 4 through to Sunday, December 6, 2009.
Despite some minor injuries, Mario nished well ahead of his colleagues with David Wilson in second with 87 wins, however David was the leading money earner with $1,706,900 in earnings. Fernando Perez was third with 83 wins and $1,475,901; Frank Fuentes was fourth with 82 wins and $1,371,728; with Pedro Alvarado rounding out the top ve with 71 wins and $1,371,728 in earnings.
Racing will be Friday through Sunday for the month of April with Wednesday night racing beginning April 29. Thursdays will be added beginning June 4 with no Thursday racing the week preceding a holiday Monday.
A Tentative application for 2009 race dates for Fort Erie Race Track has been submitted to the ORC by Nordic Gaming Corporation whereas they state that the application for dates was submitted in “good faith” but noting that if “Nordic is unable to secure a satisfactory arrangement with stakeholders over the next few months, Nordic may not be in a position to carry out the live dates submitted.”
It was a landslide nish for leading 2008 trainer Troy Taylor who had 53 wins and $975,256 in earnings. In second was Terry Jordan with 35 wins and $595,864 in earnings; Craig MacPherson nished third with 33 wins and $611,310; Barbara Heads was fourth with 30 wins and $523,079; and Toni Cloutier was fth with 27 wins and $459,228 in earnings.
Nordic asked for a reduction of live dates from 84 (2007 base year) to 78 in 2009 with racing beginning Saturday, May 2, every Sunday through Tuesday until October 27, 2009. There will also be live racing on Saturday, July 4.
Live Thoroughbred racing will return to Hastings on April 18, 2009.

The bay colt’s new trainer is Mark Fournier.
An earner of $832,089 in 23 starts, Legal Move was purchased by Schickedanz with the long-term plan of standing him as a stallion.

Paul Ryneveld, a 38-year-old native of Renton, Washington, has been named Director of Racing at Hastings Racecourse.
Ryneveld comes with an impressive administrative racing background that includes managerial positions at Fairplex Park, Great Lakes Downs, Sunland Park, Emerald Downs and Longacres.

Legal problems kept Bold N Flashy out of the breeding spotlight the past couple of years and despite his limited crops the past few seasons, he still remains one of the top stallions in Canada for progeny earnings.

A son of Bold Ruckus, Bold N Flashy’s top progeny include Graded Stakes winner, Marco Be Good; and multiple stakes winners Miss Crissy, Devastating, Bold N Fancy (each earning more than $500,000) as well as the talented multiple winner Flashy Anna.
