Northern Dancer - Continued from Page 18
At his peak of popularity as a stallion, he was so intensely sought after that his stud fee soared to over $1 million, with no guarantee. His 14 yearlings in 1984 averaged an astounding $3.3 million at auction. In 1983, a yearling son, Snaafi Dancer, sold for a world-record $10.2 million. In 1985, a yearling grandson, Seattle Dancer, sold for $13.1 million and in 2006, a two-year old great-grandson was sold at auction for a world record $16 million.
Northern Dancer’s offspring hit the ground running. With their success both on the track and as sires and broodmares, his influence on the breed quickly grew. Today, it is estimated that 80-90% of all thoroughbreds have him in their pedigrees. In 23 seasons, Northern Dancer sired 635 foals. 488 started in races, of which 368 were winners. 147 were stakes winners (SW). He was a Champion Sire in the U. S. & Champion Sire in the UK four times. He was also Champion Broodmare sire in the U. S. He sired 26 champions in Great Britain, France, Japan, Italy, the U. S. and Canada. Northern Dancer established a dynasty by becoming a great sire of Champion Sires. They included: Be My Guest, Danzig,
Dixieland Band, El Gran Senor, Fairy King, Lyphard, Lomond, Nijinsky 11, Northern Taste, Northfields, Nureyev, Sadler’s Wells, Storm Bird, The Minstrel and Vice Regent.
Today, Northern Dancer’s many grandsons and great-grandsons dominate almost every major race in the world and have become themselves, leading sires in North America, England, Australia, Ireland, France, Japan, Argentina, South Africa and Brazil. They have earned more money and won more major stakes races and Breeders’ Cup events than those of any other stallion. One in particular that stands out is Storm Cat, currently having the highest advertised worldwide stud fee of $500,000 at Overbrook Farm in KY. Storm Cat's sons and daughters have earned over $100,000,000 on
the track.
Coolmore Stud in Europe pursued the progeny of
Northern Dancer like no other and as a result, became a recognizable breeding power. Christy Grassick, Coolmore’s manager told THE GAME, “Northern Dancer was a fabulous sire and sire of sires. We are most fortunate to have one of his greatest sons standing here at Coolmore in Sadler’s Wells.”
Northern Dancer is truly the greatest Sire of the 20th century and maybe, of all-time. His influence on the thoroughbred breed will not diminish for many years to come. His resting place, marked by a marble slab at Windfields in Oshawa should be designated as a National Historic Site.
