Despite being raised by city dwellers, Dana Karczewski, has spent the majority of her life with horses. “My parents were city people who wouldn’t know the difference between a horse and a cow.” laughed Dana when asked about her introduction to horses. “My father was transferred to Sault Ste. Marie, and I started with the pony club there.”
She went through ever discipline offered at the club, jumper, hunter, dressage and horse care. “I went through the whole thing without really learning too much.” admits Dana, “You really don’t learn how to ride until you have to learn to ride ‘by the seat of your pants’”.
Dana explained that her real education with horses began when she left home and worked galloping horses at Woodbine.
Before coming to the track,
she had been galloping an
average of 4 endurance horses
whose daily workout including trotting 5 to 10 miles a day. She was fit and in very good shape when she arrived at the racetrack however she found that she still had a lot to learn about exercising thoroughbreds.
Dana worked for various people at the track part-time while putting herself through school in Toronto eventually advancing to College to study Civil Engineering.
After the birth of her daughter, Manhattan (now age 21), Dana moved with her family to Timmons, Ontario to help start up a riding school. After four years they moved back south and left working with horses while she raised her daughter.
Dana has since spent the last twelve years breaking horses for various people in the thoroughbred industry and she is now hoping that her good name and

Mowie, the resident donkey at Langford Church Stables
experience will take her to the next level with her own stable near Brantford.
Langford Church Stables has 22 stalls, half of which are filled with borders, the other half are reserved for thoroughbred racehorses.
Dana offers yearling breaking, lay-ups, and injury recovery for thoroughbreds, “It is a quiet facility in a nice setting with good wooden fencing.” boasts Dana, “I have had good comments on how I handle babies, and I have a terrific vet who can do anything. We’ve had good success with injuries.”
Dana also mentions the resident donkey, Mowie, who is the host of the farm, “He has quite a calming effect with the horses. He’s a little donkey who makes friends easily.”

The torrential amounts of rain that the UK has had over the past weeks have caused havoc for trainers and racecourses alike. The ever jovial trainer Jonjo O'Neill on discussing how the torrential rains had affected his testing uphill gallops announced, "Most of my gallops are down in the Plough pub."
He added, “I've never seen rain like it - we had two foot of water in one of the rooms of our house and then the damage to the gallops, which we've been working on today. We should have one of them back in action tomorrow."
Many trainers have had gallops washed away and Worcester and Southwell racecourses have been under four feet of water in places, with Cheltenham racecourse under 12 feet at one time. Clerk of the course Simon Claisse reported, “The ground would be good to firm, good in places, but you've got to find it first." Meanwhile at Newbury, Arab Racing lost its premier day of the year due to the track being flooded.
Over 10,000 fish were rescued and returned to the river after being stranded on Worcester racecourse by receding water.
Arena Leisure who own both tracks say that Worcester should be ready to honour its jumps schedule soon, but
Southwell will take much longer before racing. There is damage to the buildings at Southwell and extensive damage to the Fibresand all-weather racing surface.
On replacing the surface, Chief Executive Mark Elliott said, "At this stage it is a possibility, but it is too early to say for sure. If we do have to do this, we will consider the options for the sort of surface we have."
That could mean a switch from Fibresand to a Polytrack surface. Polytrack has received rave reviews from trainers and is used at Lingfield and Wolverhampton - Arena's other two all- weather tracks - as well as the Jockey Club-owned Kempton Park, near London.
