Ah! Spring training...especially on warm sunny days it is a wonderful time of year when dreams are not yet spoiled by the vagaries of racing and all possibilities are endless. It is a time when new alliances are nurtured, and the rite of passage for young horses begins. It is a time of speculation and hope—something we seem to be a bit short of these days.
racing days and a couple of important purse increases.

A Look at Racing in British Columbia By Jim Reynolds
At Hastings, amid economic uncertainties, several things have happened that should make the 2009 season less gloomy. The rst is that several of our best horses are back in training. Bob Cheema’s True Metropolitan and Dancing Allstar are looking in good form. According to trainer Terry Jordan the lly will probably make her season debut in Ontario in April and then return to Hastings.
The BC Oaks and BC Derby weekend will be September 26-27 with $650,000 in purses spread over ve stake races. And this year the purse
for the Derby has been increased to $300,000 while the BC Oaks will be run for a purse of $125,000 and the Delta Colleen, on the same day, will have a purse of $100,000 (up from $50k in previous years).
Mary will be greatly missed. She loved to be at the track, loved training hoses and she leaves us with memories of her fantastic warmth and wonderful smile.
Opening day, which apparently
will begin with a parade of last year’s champions is slated for Saturday April 18. The season will include 76 racing days with 41 stakes races offering more than $2.5 million in purse money.
Vancouver racing fans should be happy that the Friday night cards have been increased to 16, running through June, July and August and there are plans to bring back a couple of the once popular Wednesday night cards on August 26 and September 2. These will help replace three weekends
lost from the schedule during the Paci c National
Exhibition. The
rest of those dates

The most exciting rivalry this year will be between last year’s Derby winner Krazy Koffee and the Alberta Derby winner Arkhill. Both are four year olds and will enter the handicap ranks against the likes of Spaghetti Mouse, BR Remark and True Met’. Should make for some excellent racing.
And there are other notable changes in the works. Racing promotions in
the form of festival-style events are planned around some of the stakes races and big week-ends including, Canada Day, the Oaks/Derby weekend, Labour Day and the B.C. Cup weekend. This year BC Cup Day races open conditions of three of it’s races
