Champion Mobil Retires to Windfields
Gustav Schickedanz’s homebred champion Mobil will enter stud at Windfields Farm near Oshawa, Ontario in 2006. The five-year-old son of Langfuhr retires with a record of 12 wins (11 stakes) and 10 placings (all stakes) from 29 career starts, and earnings of $1,877,136. He will stand as the property of Gustav Schickedanz Thoroughbred Stables, for a fee of $6,500 Canadian funds, payable when foal stands and nurses.
“We are thrilled to acquire a horse like Mobil,” notes Windfields Farm vice-president Noreen Taylor. “He showed plenty of speed and was precocious at 2, and matured into a top older runner as well. As adaptable as he was versatile, Mobil is truly deserving of the title, ‘Canada’s Iron Horse’”.
Windfields farm manager Simon Cassidy agrees, “We are tremendously excited to bring a horse as good-looking and talented as Mobil into our stallion barn. His soundness, tenacity and sheer will to win make him a wonderful sire prospect. The Schickedanz family has bred some really brilliant horses, and we are very glad to be associated with them.”
Mobil won stakes from ages 2 to 5, including graded stakes wins at distances from 7 furlongs to 1 1/14 miles, on dirt and turf, winning or placing in 21 stakes races including 12 graded stakes. In what was to be his final start, he faced a top international field and finished second to likely Breeders’ Cup Mile favorite Leroidesanimaux in Woodbine’s $1,000,000 Atto Mile on
September 18.
“Every time he comes out, he shows up, digs in, and fights
hard,” according to trainer Mike Keogh. “He’s just a lovely horse.” Mobil won four straight races at 2 including the prestigious Cup and Saucer Stakes. He returned at three to capture both the 7-furlong Queenston S. and the 1 1/8 mile Plate Trial S. before finishing second to stablemate Wando in the Queen’s Plate. He went on to win three additional stakes at three, including the Toronto Cup H. on the turf and the main-track Ontario Derby.
He was voted Canada’s Sovereign Award winner as champion older horse at 4 in 2004 after winning the Vigil H. with a 104 Beyer Rating, and a dominant 12 3/4 length scored in the Dominion Day Handicap. His six 2005 starts include a 1 1/2 length victory in the 1 1/8 mile Halton H. on the turf, and second place finishes in four graded stakes on both dirt and turf, at distances from 7 furlongs to 1 3/8 miles.
Sired by Gustav Schickedanz’s homebred champion Langfuhr out of winning Naskra mare, Kinetigal, Mobil is a half-brother to Kinkennie, winner of $222,458 and third in the 1998 Queen’s Plate. His second dam, stakes placed Kenergy, by King Emperor, is a half-sister to graded stakes winner Between the Hedges and multiple stakes winner Final Chapter.

Champion One For Rose Retired
Champion Older Mare in 2003 and 2004, 6-year-old, One For Rose, has been retired after sustaining an injury which would have seen her out of training for a least 8 weeks. Owners Lou and Carlo Tucci of Tucci Stables made the decision to instead retire the millionaire mare “out of respect”.
One For Rose was in training at Woodbine preparing for a possible three-peat in the Maple Leaf Stakes which is scheduled for November 12 this year.
Already the winner of three Stakes in 2005, the $182,625 Ontario Matron H.; the Gr.3 $161,500 Seagram Cup and the $125,000 Algoma Stakes, the Maple Leaf would have put the seal on another Sovereign for Older Mare in 2005, which she is still likely to win votes for regardless.
One For Rose is entered to be sold in the Keeneland Mixed Sale in January under the consignment of Three Chimneys, a decision which Carlo said was very difficult to make. “It will be real sad to say goodbye.” said Carlo who continued on to say that Tucci Stables has their sights set on winning a Canadian Classic race and if they get the money they are hoping for, then they will reinvest it into some nice Canadian horses.
