Close Race for Top Spot at Hastings
With a month to go until the end of the 2005 thoroughbred season at Hastings Racecourse, the top three trainers of 2004 have been replaced by trainers who were knocking on the door at the end of last sea- son.
Trainer Gary Demorest, fourth in last year’s standings, has taken on sole posses- sion of the top spot at Hastings with 40 wins and $792,937 in purse earnings. Trainer Terry Clyde, who is looking to make history by being the first female leading trainer at the Vancouver racetrack, will have some catching up to do in second
with 32 wins and $511,189 in earnings. Currently in third place is trainer Terry Jordan with 28 wins and $507,917 in earn- ings. Terry has certainly turned things around since last season when he finished off with only 8 wins and $103,035 in earn-
ings.
Last year’s leading trainer, Dino
Condilenios along with second and third place finishers Harold Barroby and Barbara Heads round out the next three spots with Dino at 25 wins; Barbara at 24 wins and Harold at 23 wins.
Justin Stein - two wins away from Hastings Apprentice Record
Horse Racing Alberta Finalist for National Award for Marketing Excellence
Edmonton – Horse Racing Alberta (HRA) is one of three finalists for Marketing Campaign of the Year in the TIAC National Awards for Tourism Excellence presented by The Globe and Mail.
Thirty-five companies and individuals were selected as finalists in 13 categories representing the best of Canada’s tourism industry. The two other finalists in the category of Marketing Campaign of the Year are Air Canada, and Nova Scotia Tourism and Culture.
In a first for the North American racing industry, Horse Racing Alberta launched an integrated brand and tourism advertising campaign in 2004 that supported an overall Alberta brand of Western heritage. It introduced packaging initiatives, developed with Travel Alberta
and local industry, to promote travel to racetracks. The campaign included ads that connected emotionally with audiences by using creative horses' names (e.g. Bye Bye Boredom) and personalities, outdoor billboards, and live TV shows broadcast across Alberta and neighbouring provinces.
By October 2004, brand awareness of horse racing as an entertainment option had increased 14% over 2003, and the campaign had succeeded in positioning horse racing as a fun event for a younger demographic.
The winner was presented the award at a gala dinner on October 25, 2005, at the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac in Québec City, Québec, during Canada’s Tourism Leadership Summit.
Apprentice Jockey Justin Stein continues the trend of apprentice riders leading the standings in 2005 (Emma Jayne Wilson at Woodbine and Chad Beckon at Fort Erie) and is only two wins away from beating the record of 123 wins by an apprentice at Hastings. Dave Wilson set the record on his way to a Sovereign Award for top apprentice in Canada in 1995.
Justin, who began his riding career as an apprentice at the end of last season, looks to be unbeatable this season with 122 wins and $2,158,627 in earnings thus far. His
closest rival is last season’s leading jockey, Pedro Alvarado, who will probably have to settle for second this year. He currently sits with 93 wins and $1,598,860 in earnings. Jockeys David Wilson (75 wins), Frank Fuentes (66 wins) and Chad Hoverson (55 wins) are almost equal distances apart. It is unlikely that Justin will be knocked out of top spot however the positions below could easily change in the coming month siting the example of a four-win day for David Wilson on October 22 when he was aboard for the win in the first, third, fourth and ninth races that day.
Grande Prairie has Grand Expansion Plans
Work will begin in early January on the new racing entertainment centre at Evergreen Park in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Grande Prairie Exhibition has been given permission to install 99 slot machines which are expected to be part of a two phase project involving a new grandstand with dining facilities as well as a simulcast
centre and additional seating.
The existing building at the Exhibition
will be renovated for concession stands, washrooms and pari-mutuel windows.
A $9 million trade and convention centre complex is a separate project which is also in the future for the Park.

A Shaky Start Euthanized
Five year-old mare, A Shaky Start, had to be humanely euthanized in October after it was determined that an injury she sustained during the running of the Fall Classic Distaff at Northlands Park, was not going to heal.
According to a quote in the Daily
Racing Form, trainer Al Strumecki, who co-owned the horse with Gary and Janet Kropp, said there was too much damage to the sesamoid bone in her ankle.
A Shaky Start was Alberta’s all-time leading homebred money winning filly of $382,003.
