It was reported in the Palm Beach Post on March 22, that an undisclosed number of horses from one barn at Palm Meadows training facility in Boynton Beach, Florida, have shown symptoms of having streptococcus equibacterium, a bacterial infection more commonly known as Strangles.
Symptoms include fever, respiratory problems and swollen lymph nodes. Although strangles is rarely fatal, it is highly contagious.
A similar outbreak was reported a week earlier at Churchill Downs’ Trackside training center, where 19 horses tested positive for strangles. It was reported in the Toronto Star on March 26 that Kentucky Derby contender Sun King and 2004 Horse of the Year, Ghostzapper, were among two-dozen horses that have been moved from the facility as a pre-cautionary measure.
There are still a large number of horses scheduled to ship in to Woodbine from their winter destinations and due to the recent out- breaks in both Kentucky and Florida, Woodbine Entertainment Group is asking for a Vet Certificate for all horses entering the grounds.
In a memo dated March 24 and addressed to all horsemen, it stated that effective immediately, all horses entering Woodbine’s grounds, regardless of final destination, will be required to submit a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection signed by the attending veterinarian within two (2) days prior to the arrival at Woodbine.
The certificate must contain the following statement:
"Horses represented on this certificate of Veterinary Inspection have not originated from a barn or premises that is under quarantine for strangles, nor has
been exposed to a confirmed or suspect case of strangles, nor has shown clinical signs suggestive of strangles, nor has been febrile within the previous three weeks."
The rectal temperature of every horse must also be noted on the health certificate along with the date and route of administration of any horses that have been vaccinated for strangles.
Any horse van arriving at Woodbine without a Veterinary Certificate for each horse on the van will be denied entrance at the stable gate.
Upon arrival on to the Woodbine grounds, all horses must have a veterinary examination within 24 hours of arrival. The horse’s temperature must be recorded and made available to the Commission Veterinarian upon request.
It was also stated that horse transport vans must be cleaned and sanitized between shipments and no hay, feed or bedding can accompany horses to remain at Woodbine. All hay and straw on incoming vans must be disposed of in a designated location.
All inquiries should be directed to Dr. Greg Taylor 416-729-7858, or the Ontario Racing Commission office, 416-675-7223, ext 2237.

New Dorm in 2006 at Woodbine
According to Woodbine Entertainment Group’s Backstretch News newsletter, an agreement between WEG and the HBPA has been reached which will see the building of a new dormitory on the backstretch. The dorm, which will have 36 rooms, will accommodate an additional 72 backstretch workers and is scheduled to be completed for the 2006 season. With the new dorm the number of backstretch individuals housed at Woodbine will increase to 300 from the 228 current figure.
The cost of the project is to be shared between the HBPA and WEG and is estimated to be a $2 million expenditure. The HBPA will be allo- cating $1 million for the project and will loan an additional $1 million in capital to WEG.
