Jockey Weight Scale will Rise at Fort Erie
An increase in the weights Fort Erie jockeys will be assigned in 2005 has been announced by Racing Secretary Thomas Gostlin.
The minimum -- exclusive of apprentice allowances -- riders will scale this season will be 116, four pounds more than the 2004 minimum.
In most races, three year olds will be assigned 120 pounds and older horses 123 pounds. Allowances for specific conditions will subtract two or four pounds from those weights. Jockeys of fillies and mares competing against males will receive the normal five pound weight off allowance.
Last year, horses also could get weight off if they were entered to be claimed for a lesser amount (for example, $4,500 in a $5,000 claiming race). There will be no such conditions this year, Gostlin said, adding that he raised the weight scale because of concerns for jockeys' health, which has been growing in many other
racing circles. Gostlin also
said that John
Dalton, who
formerly trained
at Woodbine,
would be Bruno
Schickedanz's
exclusive trainer
at Fort Erie for
2005 and that
Don Schnell will
be coming down
from Alberta with
his stable. Other
sources report that jockey Jake Barton has sold his Fort Erie home and will be riding elsewhere in the coming season, as will rider Patricia Trimble.

Effective with the start of the 2005 live thorough- bred racing season at Woodbine, the complimentary VHS race tapes which were available at no charge to the winning connections, will be discontinued to make way for DVD copies of the race.
According to Tom Cosgrove, WEG’s Director of Thoroughbred Racing, a DVD version of the races was more in demand than the VHS copies.
However The DVD’s will not be complimentary and must be ordered if you wish to receive recorded footage of the race.
Tom explained that Woodbine Entertainment Group does not have the facilities to create the DVDs on site and have therefore entrusted the services of Clive Cohen of Image Media to provide the DVD service. Clive is the standardbred photographer at Woodbine and currently provides the DVD service for the standardbred counterparts. The race DVDs will be available to purchase for a cost of $22 to $25
per DVD copy.
Clive Cohen will be available each racing
day to take requests for DVDs at his office located on the grandstand apron near the winners’ enclosure.
Woodbine will continue to supply VHS tapes upon request and at a cost of $16 per tape. The tapes will now have to be ordered through Sue Clark in the Marketing Department at ext 2513. Complimentary VHS race tapes will continue to be provided to the winning connections of the 101 scheduled stakes races and the 18 overnight stakes in 2005.
