Renovations at Woodbine
The winter layoff from live Thoroughbred racing at Woodbine allowed for the completion of a number of renovations on the backstretch. Continuing with the mandate to retrofit the barns on the back- stretch, sprinkler systems were installed in the Sales Barns along with barns 36 to 38.
Barn 16, which was formerly known as the Receiving Barn
has been renovated to become a
32 stall Pony Barn. Renovations to the old mainte- nance garage will convert it into
a 16 stall ship-in facility which is scheduled for completion in May.
Construction continues on an exterior stairwell at the west entrance of the Woodbine Grandstand
of external stairwells.
The stairwell which also
includes an elevator, will provide improved access to the paddock area from all floors of the grandstand including the Woodbine Club and Northern Dancer Room.

Tax Rules Revised for Horse Farms
The Province of Ontario announced in mid-March that the new assessment criteria for horse farms has been revised.
In 2003, the Ontario Municipal Property Assessment Corp began reassessing some horse farms at a higher commercial tax rate resulting in a 1200 per cent tax increase for many
equestrian centres.
After an outcry from the equestrian
industry the new assessment was put on hold and a revised version was announced which allowed farms that breed, raise and board horses to be assessed as agriculture while properties used for lessons, trail rides and riding camps will be assessed as residential
(the same classifi- cation as other recreational activities such as golf and ski hills.)
Mixed-use facilities will be assessed on a proportional basis depending on use.
