....incredibly, this very same picture of my father and his two buddies at the track in 1961. Gordon Laws embraces the memories,
"It was a well-planned day. We had a lot of fun and a lot of kibitzing around," he says as his face breaks into a smile.
Back then the art of reading a racing form was not especially refined. Picking a winner wasn't too complicated a procedure.
"We'd go by names sometimes," Laws recalls," But mostly by jockey. Hugo Dittfach, Avelino Gomez, Ron Turcotte, Jim Fitzsimmons. Those were the guys."
The man to the left of the picture is Fred Eisen whose home was on the other side of Mr. Laws' house. Mr. Eisen is still in good health, a robust 74. And his memory of that day is surprisingly intact.
"We were the mob from Gordon Rd. We went to the clubhouse and paid the extra $2.50. We were going first class," he told me, clearly relishing the flashback.
Since Eisen was barely 30 at the time, my older and more experienced father took on the role of guide and advisor for that day.
"What the hell did I know about the track?" laughs Eisen, "Your father knew all about everything. He really was the leader of the mob for our day at the races."
Eisen's face grows animated as he remembers the details of an outing with his neighbourhood buddies.
"In the months leading up to that day, we had all discovered vodka. Your dad was certainly more dignified than we were, but I can remember we had a couple of drops of vodka before we left for the track."
Gordon Laws testifies as to the beverage of choice that day.
"When we got there we drank a little vodka at the bar as well."
The picture does bring up one painful memory for Fred Eisen.
"In the first or second race, there was a horse called Pam's Pet," he recalls, " Pam is my second oldest daughter, so of course I had to bet it, but Gordon Laws and your Dad kept saying this horse did not have a chance, don't waste your time. The girls will never let us live it down if we don't come back with money."
I didn't really have to ask how Pam's Pet did.
"Pam's Pet came in and paid a hell of a price," says Eisen ruefully, "But the guys had talked me out of it."
"That could be true," laughs Gordon Laws when informed of the charges.
It's just an old Kodak moment, one of hundreds of pictures that tell the story of a man's life. This one speaks of the pleasure of having something in common with your father.
But most important to me, it's an enduring image of Dad having a good time.
