New Insurance Product for Horse Industry
Max Freed,Veteran Owner/Breeder Honoured
On June 3, the
HBPA (Manitoba Division) honoured
veteran 94-year-old
owner and former
breeder Max Freed.
The third race named
the Max Freed Recognition Purse
and Mr. Freed made
the presentation to the winning team. Following the race, won by Double D Count and jockey Renaldo Cumberbatch, HBPA board member Brian Billeck presented Mr. Freed with a beautiful hand carved horse’s head.
Mr. Freed owned Maxwell King stables and began his racing career at Wittier Park in
St. Boniface in the 1930’s. Mr Freed continued his involvement at the forerunner to Assiniboia Park, Polo Park in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s until Polo Park ceased operation in 1956. Max Freed is still active at Assiniboia Down which opened in 1958, with two horses currently running.
In the past few years the horse industry had been put in a difficult position when it came to insuring their horse farms however all that is about to change.
According to BFL Canada’s Jackie Wedley, after September 11 and the recent natural disasters in the United States, the Insurance companies went back to the basics. Focusing on home, auto and commercial insurance products, they dropped the specialty coverage, which included the horse industry and its unique set of insurance needs. As a result, there wasn’t any insurance companies available to insure horse farms, and because the U.S. companies had different areas of concerns i.e. hurricanes, the insurance being offered was high priced or didn’t provide adequate coverage for the horse industry.
For the last 18 months, BFL Canada, has been working to resolve the insurance turmoil and have recently launched a new trio of insurance products specific to the horse farm industry in Canada.
Working with the International company, AIG Insurance, BFL Canada now offers insurance products for the Racing Industry, the Equestrian Industry (riding, teaching, horse shows) and the “hobby” horse farm.
“This is something that has never been done before in the industry.” said Jackie of the products they now offer, “It took a long time to put together a product which is superior and offers so many perks.”
The products will offer both property and liability coverage in a single policy which includes risk coverage for homes, barns and other buildings as well as replacement cost coverage of personal possessions, equipment and tack. The liability portion also includes bodily injury to participants, incidental boarding as well as stableman’s liability.
The products provide a perfect fit for the racing industry because of the liability issues of care/custody and control of other people’s horses. There is also extensive coverage for accidental death or exercise rider/employee injury as well as coverage for those who travel to other racetracks or winter in the U.S.
“The horse industry across Canada should take part in this.” said Jackie, “People can contact us themselves or have their broker contact us.
“This (insurance) product is really going to take off because right now we have people who are paying too much for their insurance or they are paying for insurance that doesn’t fully cover their needs.”
