Sunny’s Halo Re-interred
Texas’ all-time leading sire by progeny earnings, Sunny’s Halo, will be re-interred at the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs where he was the winner of his greatest triumph, the 1983 G1 Kentucky Derby.
Sunny’s Halo was euthanized on June 3, 2003 after suffering a stroke at Tom and Marcia Slack’s Double S Thoroughbred Farm in Bullard, Texas, where he stood his final years of stud duty.
In the spring of this year, the 70 acres of land at Double S, including Sunny’s Halo’s burial site were sold to real estate developers.
On June 20 Sunny’s Halo was exhumed and his remains were cremated and sent in an urn along with his headstone to Kentucky. In a ceremony likely planned at the end of the Churchill Downs meet in mid-July, the Canadian-bred Sunny’s Halo, who was owned by the late David Foster and trained by Canadian trainer David Cross Jr., will be the fourth Derby winner to be interred at the Derby Museum. The others include Brokers Tip (1933), Swaps (1955), and Carry Back (1961).
The 47-day, 2006 Spring Thoroughbred meet at Stampede Park in Calgary ended on June 18 as the thoroughbreds moved North to begin the Summer Meet at Northlands Park in Edmonton.
Trainer Greg Tracy was the meet’s leading trainer with a record of 24-16-16 and $372,591 in 98 starts. His wins included three stakes victories with Smudgeledo winning the Teeworth Plate and the Stampede Park Sprint while Alberta’s 2005 2-year-old Filly Champion and Horse of the Year, Kaylee’s Magic won the Mount Royal Stakes. Greg didn’t waste any time in continuing his winning ways in Edmonton. Smudgeledo was the winner of the first Stakes race at the meet, the Journal Handicap on June 24.
Trainer Ron Grieves finished second in the trainers standings at Stampede Park with a record of 19-17-15 and $279,177 in 90 starts. Rounding out the top five trainers were: Dale Greenwood (107-16-16-17 $191,535); Dale Saunders (109-15-23-20 $272,419) and Robertino Diodoro (99-15-10-7 $157,031).
It was Vancouver-based trainer, Terry Jordon, who was the leading stakes winning trainer at the Calgary meet with 4 stakes wins including Calgary’s richest thoroughbred race, the Alberta Derby, with Halo
Stephen.
As for the jockeys, Quincy Welch ran away with
the title with a record of 78-41-46 and $1,009,553 in 286 starts with Jockey Rickey Walcott in second with 54-44-49 $752,677 in 278 starts. It was the sixth rid- ing title in seven years at Stampede Park for Quincy who was the winner of five stakes.
Rounding out the top five in the jockeys standings are: Stephan Heiler (240-39-47-42 $622,093); Real Simard (189-28-25-22 $362,741) and Shannon Beauregard (240-27-40-36 $394,317).
The 72-day Summer thoroughbred meet at Northlands began June 23 and will run through to October 22 with racing Wednesday and Friday evenings beginning at 6pm; and Saturday, Sunday and Holidays afternoons beginning at 1pm.
There are 35 stakes races scheduled including the Canadian Derby on August 26 and the Alberta Fall Classic, featuring 7 stakes races for Alberta-breds, on Saturday, September 23.
Also, the 101st running of the Millarville Races will be held at Millarville on
Canada Day, July 1.
