An Eye Splice is used to make a permanent loop in three-strand rope.
It retains all of the strength of the rope, making it stronger than a
regular loop knot. It is sometimes tied tightly around a protective
thimble to protect the inside of the loop from abrasion. Each strand is

usually tucked three times for natural fiber ropes, and up to five is
sometimes used for more slippery synthetics. Sometimes the strands are
thinned out after each level of tucks to taper the splice.

               HEAVING LINE KNOT

The Heaving Line Knot, also known as the Monk’s Knot, gets its name

from the heaving line—a smaller line made to heave from a boat to dock
so that it can be used to pull a heavier line over.

STEP 1 Double the line back for the length desired, and then begin
tightly wrapping the running end around the doubled-up rope, making
               concentric circles to the left.

STEP 2 As you get to the end, tuck the running end through the last of
the remaining bight. Pulling on the standing part will tighten this last
