Alan Smith
Global Head of Risk Strategy and Chief of Staff,
Global Risk, HSBC
Alan Smith is one of the most respected risk strategists in the
City. He has been at HSBC for 24 years in a variety of senior
finance, risk and capital management roles in London and
Saudi Arabia.
He also is active in several other roles. He is a Fellow of
the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales
and has an MBA in Finance from Cass Business School, City
University of London, a member of the Board of Trustees of
the Global Association of Risk Professionals, and sits on the
Audit Committee of the Commonwealth Secretariat.
He is also a member of the Advisory Committee to the
Centre for Risk Studies at the Judge Business School,
University of Cambridge, and in 2015 he co-authored and
published his first book, Dreaming a Nation, covering the
Barbados journey to independence.
In April 2018, Alan was appointed for a three-year term to
be a Church Commissioner of the Church of England, to sit
on their Audit and Risk Committee. He was profiled in the
2017 Anti-Slavery International Impact report as a supporter
of their important work.
Within HSBC, Alan is responsible for Risk Appetite, Stress
Testing, Risk Governance and Model Oversight and chairs
HSBC’s Global Stress Testing, and Model Risk Oversight
Committees.
Alan is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants
of England and Wales. He earned his undergraduate
degree in accounting from the University of the West
Indies in Jamaica and an MBA in finance from the Cass
Business School in London, which he attended as a UK

previously worked for AIG as Head of Finance Business
Partnering, UK and Europe.
She joined AIG in 2011 as a Financial Planning and
Analysis (FP&A) Manager. She was promoted to Head of UK
FP&A within a year of joining and thereafter promoted to UK
Finance Director.
A Chartered Accountant by training, Netsai describes
her role as challenging the operation of business, acting
as a catalyst for change and identifying opportunities for
improvement and development.
Prior to Willis Tower Watson and AIG, she worked
for Royal & Sun Alliance, Deloitte & Touché and
PriceWaterhouseCoopers, in the United Kingdom, Bermuda
and Africa.
In 2014, she was presented with the Women in the City
Woman of Achievement Award.
She is well known for mentoring and inspiring emerging
leaders, and has actively sponsored rising stars. In June
2016, one of her mentees Adobea Atsrefi was named in We
Are The City’s Top 50 rising stars in Insurance.
