EDITOR’S NOTE
Shepreneurs in developing countries
Investing in women and girls is a promising way to develop a global economy. One way to do that is via
women’s entrepreneurship in developing nations. A thriving and successful economy and an enlarged consumer
base are just some of the benefits of increased female membership in business and leadership positions.
Developing nations stand to face the most benefits from the inclusion of women in the business world.
Current women’s economic empowerment interventions are not enough to overcome all obstacles facing female
entrepreneurs. The emerging evidence from psychology and experimental economics on agency, mindset,
and leadership show that for successful interventions to be transformative, they need to move beyond basic
access to financial and human capital and also tackle central psychological, social, and skills constraints on
women entrepreneurs. Emerging evidence from recent studies on different capital-based, training-based, and
gender-based interventions, using randomized control trials, present promising interventions to support women
entrepreneurs.
Providing business skills trainings is a basic step toward empowering women entrepreneurs, but to truly achieve
transformative change, training programs need to address deeper psychological and social constraints facing
women.
Shepreneurs are driving change in various sectors, businesses, and industries, and rightfully deserve to be
celebrated. The day is also a reminder that we need to foster talent and help enable women from all across the
globe, from different strata and backgrounds into the arena.
