Shingles, pneumonia vaccinations are vital, easy to get
March 5, 2019
Eating whole foods, exercising and getting enough sleep is the triad of healthy living but it doesn't eliminate the possibility of a
viral or bacterial bug catching a ride in that healthy body. The easiest way to prevent diseases that can threaten our health is by
getting vaccinated and Jewel-Osco makes it even easier.
"With 179 stores with a pharmacy in the Chicagoland area, Jewel-Osco makes it extremely convenient to get vaccinated against
shingles and pneumonia," explained Ryan L. McCann, PharmD and Director of Pharmacy Operations. "Anyone over age 50 can get
the shingles vaccine without a prescription and the vaccine has a 90 percent efficacy rate," he said. One out of three adults will
develop the painful condition and the likelihood increases with age. "All of our pharmacists are trained to administer the shots and
we bill your insurance provider so it eliminates the extra steps."
It may surprise you that shingles vaccination is important whether you have had chickenpox or not, according to Chandni Clough, PharmD and Patient Care Services Manager at
Jewel-Osco Pharmacies. And don't think you can't get the painful condition if you're under the age of 50. "There's a lot of room to do research in the younger population,"
Clough said, "and as a matter of fact, my husband is just getting over shingles. He's 32!"
Shingrix is the newer and now preferred vaccine with two doses administered within a two- to six-month interval. How long does protection last? "It's not like the flu shot that
you have get every year," Clough explained. "But the second dose is important to ensure long-term protection. Come in and talk to our pharmacists and we will review your age
and risk factors." Since Jewel-Osco pharmacists run the claim and bill your insurance provider, your job is basically to show up and roll up your sleeves.
Pneumococcal disease causes thousands of infections every year and vaccines work well at preventing severe symptoms and hospitalization. The Centers for Disease Control
(CDC) recommends the pneumococcal vaccine for all adults 65 years or older and for those over age 2 who are at increased risk.
"PCV13 protects against 13 types of pneumococcal bacteria and PPSV23 protects against 23 types," McCann said. Adults 19 and older with certain health conditions like heart
disease or diabetes should also get vaccinated. "I have asthma and I've had my pneumonia shot already," he noted. "Again, our pharmacists are all trained to screen and
administer the vaccine and we follow up if you need both vaccines."
"Our No. 1 priority is to take care of our customers," McCann said. "And after receiving any vaccination at the pharmacy, you earn a 10 percent off coupon to use on your next
grocery purchase up to $200. In addition to shingles and pneumonia, Jewel-Osco offers vaccinations to help prevent the flu, tetanus, measles, whooping cough, meningitis and
others.
Jewel-Osco, the official grocery sponsor of the Daily Herald's 2019 Fittest Loser Challenge, is committed to health. Their stores offer a wide range of foods that promote a healthy
living and accommodate all diets. Jewel-Osco will be hosting several in-store events where participants will learn about nutrition, healthy shopping and meal planning.
