Know Each Other
This is her first time in a time
share resort and she loves
it. “It is intimate, it feels like
family as the guests here
know you and you know
them. The room attendants
know for example what
specific guests like and
these details make the dif-
ference. My dream is to
continue in this job, I won’t
change this!”
‘A Happy Employee makes A Happy Guest’
Casa del Mar Beach Resort & Timeshare offers you paradise: an oceanfront loca-
tion on the white sandy Eagle Beach, the amazing blue-green colored Caribbean
ocean, wonderful luxury oceanfront or poolside timesharing suites and a world of
amenities like spa, restaurant, pool and fitness. Most important during your vaca- Juan E. Irausquin Boulevard 51
tions is a nice and clean room. Often we may take this for granted until that day we Oranjestad, Aruba
experience a not so tidy room and we notice the difference. Marking the difference T + 297 582 7000
is the key role of the Houskeeping department and we love to hear why. Meet Fay-
ola Werleman, Executive Housekeeper at Casa del mar Beach Resort & Timeshare.
“I have been the Executive Housekeeper at the resort for the last 3 years . I started
my career in 1995, as a Housekeeping Coordinator at Radisson and after I moved
to Wyndham where I worked as a Public Area manager and then Assistant Execu-
tive Housekeeper, Executive Housekeeper and Director of Housekeeping at Wynd-
ham, which then became Westin, before moving to Holiday Inn. I have been in this
job a lot of years at different resorts and also at Colegio EPI. Here at Casa del Mar
I will stay until my pension”, she laughs.
Team Spirit
Fayola loves the job because of the people. Her colleagues, the different cultures
and different mentalities she encounters and the guests of course. Her job as she
sees it is to make people happy. “A happy employee makes a happy guest. I have
an open door policy, every morning when my team comes in, I have my coffee
station ready in my office and we drink coffee together and talk about family and
so on. They go to work after and then again we have our coffee moment in the
afternoon as well before the shift is over.” Fayola connects with her team and every
Saturday she brings sandwiches for them to eat together before all start working.
“Casa del Mar’s heavy day is Saturday when it is check out, check in day. We have
a target to achieve that day as we need to have all rooms ready by 4 PM. So I work
with them, clean the rooms and so on. We work as a team and make it happen
together. I am satisfied and happy as we hardly get guests complaints.”
High Standard
Fayola explains that she has a world of people here from Colombia, Aruba, Domini-
can Republic and many more. It is important to understand these cultures but also
to determine one quality standard. “It is not always easy but we need to maintain
the work quality. Each employee is an individual and that requires a different ap-
proach. I teach them the skills myself, together with the room attendant and my
assistant John, the three of us review the standards.” Housekeepers in the Presi-
dential building has five rooms daily to clean, and housekeepers in the Ambassa-
dor building, across the street have ten rooms on Saturday, during the week the
supervisors inspect six rooms daily. When the inspection is done Fayola does the
final check. Approximately 60 people work under her supervision every day. “We
educate where necessary. We have women, but also men and even special needs
people. Everybody has the chance to work here as long as they comply with our
standards. The rooms, the public areas, the towel station, laundry and the banquet
department for set up and break down are all our mutual responsibility.” The resort
keeps innovating and Fayola just purchased new carts and other machines. “The
products we use are all environmentally friendly, the ozone system is being used to
wash the towels, with less chemicals and less water. All lights are turned off, air-con-
ditioning is set at a certain temperature until guests arrive, all that saves energy.”
