JL: It is about being helpful. It is not about your business. You are exposed to a different dimension.
RM: And you are constantly learning when you are on a board. That translates in your specific role with your organization.

MC: As an entrepreneur, the causes I have supported with larger gifts are very much connected to my passions.
RM: In my role, I see the amazing generosity of our donors daily and the consistent corporate commitment.
JL: We too are motivated by what is inspiring our employee’s causes. The significant donation for me is split between three charities, and that is based on my belief in the mission. Always the mission. I support a number of other charities, but it allows me to say to that organization, “Here is the bar,” and it then sets the limits, which I think is important for both parties.
Q: Looking at the next generation of leaders on non- profit boards and the challenges of recruiting talent, how would you motivate that next generation?
JD: It comes down to responsibility and then finding out what your passion is.
PR: I believe it is about setting a tone so that younger leaders see it is part of what we do.
JL: My recommendation is to start local within your neighborhood and town. Then it becomes a natural progression from a committee to become more involved on a board.
PG: We led a dialogue about women and board roles many years ago. It is about the conversation. n

Q: Your donation is one part of your commitment to non-profits. What is the motivation to become involved as a board member?
PR: All of our time is so valuable, but it’s about giving that time. And then once you are in the room you see the value of this board, and then your contribution...well, then it is a win.
MC: You think, “My impact will be felt more here; I see an opportunity to contribute with my counsel.”
PG: And it is an enriching experience.
