PAUL J. SINCOCK - Outgoing President
Paul was born and raised in the City of Plymouth and he was raised in a Rotary
Family, as his Father was extremely active in the Plymouth Rotary. His mother was also
involved in what was known at the time as "Rotary Anns." Paul participated in several
community service projects and worked on the Rotary Chicken Bar-Be-Que ever since he
was old enough and able to participate on the serving line. Paul attended his first Rotary
District Conference while still in high school and he helped serve the refreshments on the
train to Toronto. Also, while in high school Paul was a "Junior Rotarian" and then Principal
Bill Brown selected Paul to be the "Junior Rotarian President" and to lead the meeting that
was put on by that group of high schoolers.
Paul represents the club's first father and son combination to serve as President.
Paul's father, Bob, served as Club President in 1975 - 76 and served as Executive Secretary
for the Club for a number of years.
Paul's Rotary family continues today as he is married to wife Traci, who is a member and Past President of the
Northville Rotary Club. It was Paul who contacted a member of the Northville Rotary Club over ten years ago to
suggest that Traci would be a great member of their organization. Traci serves the Northville Community as Parks and
Recreation Director.
Paul joined Plymouth Rotary in 198 I and was almost immediately put co work on the Broadcaster Committee by
then Plymouth Observer Editor and Committee Chairperson Emory Daniels. Since that time Paul has served the club
on a number of Committees, including the Sgt. Ac Arms, Broadcaster, Community Service and the Rotary Memorial
Scholarship. Paul also served on the Plymouth Rotary Foundation Board for six years and served one year as President
of the Foundation Board.
Paul has been an active participant at a number of Rotary District Conferences as a commentator/moderator/
emcee for sessions. He has been an active participant at conferences in Traverse City, Grand Rapids and most recently
on Mackinac Island when Plymouth Rotary Member Ed Schulz was District Governor.
Paul has worked for the City of Plymouth for over twenty years and has served the City in a number of capacities
including Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, Public Safety Director, Assistant City Manager, Director of
Municipal Services and is currently serving as the City Manager.
Paul believes and lives the Rotary motto of Service Above Self. Paul is a Paul Harris Fellow and is currently
working on obtaining his Walter Panse Fellowship. Paul is extremely proud of the fact that the Panse Fellowship
Program was established during his term as President. This effort has resulted in "new" money being contributed to
the Plymouth Rotary Foundation for dedicated programs in the Plymouth community.
JACK TORNGA - Incoming President
Jack was born June 20, 1921 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and spent his entire
youth on a farm outside of Ada, Michigan, population 465. He attended a country
school with grades kindergarten through 8th, and then moved into the city of Ada and
completed 9th and 10th. That's all there was in this town. From there he attended high
school in Lowell, Michigan where he met his wife, Virginia. Jack lettered in all sports in
high school, was an all-conference tackle in football, and had the distinction of scoring
two points for the opposition in basketball! He also played football for two seasons while
attending Grand Rapids Junior College.
In January, 1941, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force where he took
his pilot training. He was transferred to the U.S. Army Air Corp in May of 1942. Jack
spent his entire military career in the training command, and was assigned to seven
different bases in the USA, training crews for combat. He stayed in the Reserves and
retired as a Major in 1981.
Jack graduated from Michigan State College in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree from the school of
Business and Public Service. He immediately went to work for General Motors. In 1961, he transferred to Ford
Motor Company and retired in 1986. His time was spent in adjusting insurance claims, handling various
management assignments, and he retired as Regional Manager, Insurance Operations.
As a Rotarian, Jack has served District 6400 on the Group Study Exchange Committee, was a team leader to
Taiwan in 1997, and was the District Governor's Representative. On the local club level, he has served on the
Plymouth Rotary Foundation for six years, and the lase year as President. He has chaired and served on various
committees and is a member of the Board of Directors. Jack and Virginia have traveled with District 6400
Friendship Exchange Groups on three different occasions. They traveled to Australia and New Zealand, South
Africa, and New Castle on Tyne, England. These have been great experiences and they have developed close friends
in the process.
Jack and Virginia were married July 26, 1945 and are proud of their two daughters, Christine and Gretchen.
They both graduated from college, Christine from the U of M, her mother's alma macer, and Gretchen from
Hillsdale College. Christine resides in Winter Park, Florida, and Gretchen in Plymouth, Michigan. Jack, Virginia,
and six ocher members of their family are Paul Harris Fellows. In addition, Jack is also a Benefactor to the Rotary
International Foundation. As you can see, Jack is a very active and committed Rotarian!
