Grit Up Series
The Grit Up Series includes 8 books with prompted talking points throughout to help children develop the social-emotional skills needed to be successful and well adjusted. This series is geared towards children in grades K to 4. However, we recommend having the books accessible for older children as the concepts are presented in an understandable and straightforward way. Each book contains additional SEL activities. Plan to spend 5 to 10 minutes with each book.
We will be focusing on the same 8 categories of social-emotional learning throughout this guide. Activities will be focused on each of the 8 categories with some general SEL activities at the end.
Grit Up lessons from the 8-book series:
Emotion Commotion is what happens when emotions take over our body. When this happens, we have to
stop and calm down so we can make good choices.
Screech Speech is when we talk to ourselves in a mean and unhelpful way. It only gets us more upset and makes things worse. We need to work to identify and change screech speech so that we can talk nicer to ourselves.
Grit Up helps us face challenges. It gives us the strength to keep trying and not give up.
Empathy can assist us when we are trying to connect with and help others. It feels good when others
help us, so it is nice to do the same for others.
Head and Heart communication is about respecting everyone’s opinions. Just because we disagree doesn’t mean someone is wrong.
Care to Repair is useful when we make a mistake or hurt someone’s feelings. We need to apologize and take responsibility for our hurtful words and/or actions. Then we should discuss how we could work to prevent from repeating the same mistake in the future.
Inner Celebration is about learning to feel proud of our efforts. It is important to reflect on how hard we have worked and allow ourselves to feel proud. We should acknowledge our efforts and accomplishments with mini inner celebrations.
Gratitude Attitude helps to remind us about all the amazing things in our lives. Even when we feel sad or upset we still have things to feel thankful for.
