Page 29 - 101 SEL Activities
P. 29
I am, I’m not, I hope (6+)
Time: 5-10minutes
Purpose: This activity can help your child learn to identify unhelpful self-talk and work to be kinder to themselves.
Instructions: You need a piece of paper and post-it notes. Make 3 vertical columns on the paper with the first labeled “I am,” the second labeled “I’m not”, and the third labeled “I hope.” Have them write 3 post-its for each column. You write 3 as well. Share your answers and discuss them. You may be surprised by the results! It is fun to do this again at a later date and show your child how they have grown and evolved.
Vlog - Have Them Teach Someone Something (6+)
Time: 15-20minutes
Purpose: This activity helps your child feel empowered and this will help influence his/her self- talk in a positive way. Mastery helps build confidence.
Instructions: Have your child become the star of their own You-Tube channel (this can be pretend!). Create a series in which they teach you (or a pretend audience) something new. Record it on your phone so you can watch it together.
Examples: how to make slimeJ, how to be a good friend, how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, how to make a favorite recipe, how to tie a shoe, how to make a fort, etc.
Helpful Hashtags (7+)
Time: 2-5minutes
Purpose: To identify and shift unhelpful thinking patterns.
Instructions: When your child says something unkind or unhelpful to themself ask them if they would make that their hashtag? Have them think about what it would mean if that were their hashtag. Feel free to insert good humor here and play around with it. In the end, try and come up with a more empowering hash tag, and have them use that as their mantra for the week.
When you child is using helpful or empowering language make sure to make note of this and encourage it! Identify helpful things they say and create a hashtag with them around what they said.
