P. 32
Instructions: When your child is working on something praise their efforts, not just the results. Hard work goes a long way. You want your child to feel proud of their efforts and hard work. Help them learn to fall in love with the process and the results will come.
Progress Videos (all ages)
Time: Varies
Purpose: Help your child see their progress and appreciate their ability to keep working. This will help your child develop grit.
Instructions: When your child is starting something new (riding a bike, tying their shoes, a school project, etc.) record their first attempts. As they continue to make progress record their attempts. Along the way, or at the end, show them the videos so that they can see their progress and feel proud of their efforts.
Define & Explore “Failure” (4+)
Time: 2-5minutes
Purpose: To help your child identify and build resiliency. It is important to define (or redefine) the word “failure.” Children often have an inaccurate view of this word and even fear it.
Instructions: Share what it means (or doesn’t mean) to you.
We often say that failure is when you fail to get back up again. If you always get back up, then
you never truly fail.J
Grit Detective (4+)
Time: 2-5minutes
Purpose: To identify and develop resiliency and grit. This also helps develop helpful self-talk.
Instructions: Have your child identify when someone else struggled and used Grit Up to keep going. Have them go through the school day and notice how many times they used grit. They will also begin to notice that other people struggle and make mistakes, etc. and they notice how grit helped them.
