5 Care to Repair
Activities targeted to help your child take responsibility for their actions.
I’m Sorry (all ages) Time: 1-2minutes
Purpose: To model how to take responsibility for your actions and how to repair relationships.
Instructions: Practice saying, “I’m sorry” to your child when you make a mistake. You are modeling how to apologize and teaching them how to forgive. Have your child practice apologizing to others when they make a mistake or hurt someone’s feelings, even if it was unintentional.
Talk about a time you had to apologize to someone and how it helped grow your relationship. Help explore if/why saying “I’m sorry” might be difficult.
Discuss the difference between just saying “ I’m sorry” and a sincere apology.
Forgiving Friends (all ages) Time: 1-2minutes
Purpose: To model how to forgive someone when they hurt you.
Instructions: When your child tells you (or you witness) someone mistreated them, teach them how to forgive and encourage them to do so.
Point out when you wrong them and ask them for forgiveness.
Excuse Me (all ages) Time: 1-2minutes
Purpose: To model how to take responsibility for your actions, even when they are unintentional.
Instructions: Teach your child to say, “Excuse me” when they burp, fart, bump into someone, etc. As your child gets older they will learn how to better control their body. In the meantime, explain how they can take responsibility for what their body does.
