President’s Message
Dear Annettes, Anns and Rotarians,
It has been an amazing journey for me till now, as the President of OUR PRESTIGIOUS CLUB.
I had the privilege to meet and interact with more than 60 Rotarians of our club, and believe me this journey has been
so warm. I could gather so much knowledge and inputs about the legacy of our club, which I never experienced ever.
The Annettes my god, are bubbling with ideas and energy. We could only pray and bless them for their enthusiasm.
We are nothing without our Anns. When we approached them for their support, they were ever ready and came
forward all out to add grace to the club activities.
All of us make together our club MADRAS CENTRAL.... and let us all CONTRIBUTE in ANY FORM to soar our
club to NEW Heights.
Keep smiling in Rotary.
With warmest personal regards,
Rtn. Sanjay Dhurka Sanjay Dhurka

37 Years of Rotary - Interview with Mr. Raman
Tell us about yourself and your family.
My name is Raman. I did my B.A graduation from Madras Presidency College. I am happily married. I have a son
who completed his MS from USA and is working there.
How did you get associated with Rotary?
I was introduced to Rotary by Charter Secretary Rtn. S. Chandrasekar and President Rtn. C.R.Ramakrishnan in the
Year of 1981 and have been a part of it ever since.
I have known Rtn S. Chandrasekar long before I became a part of the Rotary club.
The first RCMC meeting I attended was at Park Sheraton (then called Adyar Gate) conducted on 12th January 1982.
What are your roles and responsibilities?
My responsibility is to maintain the attendance register, ensuring that the hall is set up for the meeting, placing the
banners and all the required elements. I am always present half an hour before the meeting to ensure all arrange-
ments of the event are in place.
During my first few years, I was responsible for handing over food coupons to the Rotary members and maintain
Mr. Raman the accounts accordingly. I used to help out at the refreshment/bar counter too. I also used to maintain the
attendance record and send ‘Make-up Cards' to absentees so that they could try and visit other Rotary clubs and
make up their attendance.
How long has the journey been?
I have always tried to do my duty with dedication. It has been 37 years and I have seen 37 different Rotary Presidents
and all of them have been very supportive and encouraging.
How has Rotary helped you?
In the year 1990, I had to undergo a bypass surgery. It was the Rotary Club that helped me take care of the hospital
expenses.
I enjoy being part of this big Rotary Family and try to help serve the society with my small contribution.
History of The Rotary Bell
In 1922, U.S. Rotarians organized an attendance contest; the challenge was that the losing clubs would join in giving
the winning club a prize. The Rotary Club of New York City was declared the winner and to them was awarded as
a prize a bell from a popular Patrol boat, which was placed on wood that came from HMS VICTORY, Admiral
Nelson’s vessel at the battle of Trafalgar.
Since then, the bell used in rotary meetings started to represent, as on the ships, order, discipline and the time to
guide us through the weekly hour and a half meetings. The bell informs us with its sound the beginning of the
Rotary meetings, at which time people present should stand, same as at the end, in order to salute the national and
rotary Flags .The gavel symbolizes the authority invested in the Rotarian elected to the highest position in Rotary,
and through him, reminds those present of his authority. When presidents transmit their positions to their Succes-
sors at the end of their mandate, they give the bell their last hit turning the gavel over to their successor, symbolizing
the transfer of authority.
