Wave noise caused by the motion of the magnetometer within the Earth’s magnetic field as it is moved by waves in the sea as the magnetometer is towed along by a boat. Wave noise is seen as a regular and periodic variation in the measurements (Fig. 14) and it is particularly noticeable in areas free of magnetic targets where the plot of the magnetic field should show a flat line.
