are white, can often be seen painted on merchantmen, to appear more defensible.
Because the gu nports have already been di scussed in section 60 ( Make the Chocks above the gunports around the outside), it is probable that the port lids were intended here. They consisted of tw o planks, the one slightly thinner than the other, nailed to each other with the grain of the wood at right angles.
