 man-rated syntactics. To man-rate the materials an extensive amount of testing is required to insure the buoyancy will return without incident. Whereas the normal crush depth of the syntactic is 1.1%, man-rated systems are tested to 1.5% of test depth. The latest Alvin specification can readily be attained online. Figure 5.8 shows a typical high-performance material, rated to 20,000 ft (approximately 6000 m), that went well beyond its test depth. As can be seen, the material, designed (with safety factor) for 14.5 Kpsi (10.2 Mkg/m2), eventually crushed at a pressure of 16 Kpsi (11.2 Mkg/m2).
