  Torque tools are used to translate rotary motion to subsea structures for various purposes. The ISO 13628-8 standard, Table 20.3, describes various classes of torque tools based upon their capac- ity (Table 20.2).
Once the torque tool classification is selected, the shape and dimension of the actual receptacle are described in Table 20.2 by class as well as end effector shape and size (Table 20.3).
The standardized torque tool receptacle provides for tool reaction against the receptacle (as opposed to transmitting the rotary reaction to the vehicle). Figure 20.4 provides an example of a rotary torque receptacle. Note this as the interface on the wellhead side (not the ROV side).
The function of the torque tool, of course, is to provide a standardized interface along with rotary force for various applications. The vehicle camera can typically see the tool turning and can thus count the number of revolutions of the tool. Several manufacturers have made available a torque tool revolution counter that can be either attached as a separate module to the torque tool or integrated
