  576 CHAPTER 21 Practical Applications
When the inevitable does happen, keep calm, continue attempting to solve the problem, and never give up.
21.2.4 Aquaculture and scientific applications
See Figure 21.17. ROVs are quite useful in aquaculture applications for the following reasons:
• A small ROV does not stress the stock nearly as much as a swimmer.
• Use of an ROV allows more frequent inspections of the nets, mooring, and supports for the
farm without danger to divers.
• If configured properly, the ROV can recover “morts” (dead fish) remotely, thus reducing
disease propagation and diver bottom time.
• Reduce excess feeding (some species—like Norwegian salmon—will only feed from the water
column and will not bottom feed), thus saving feed meal when the stock is finished feeding.
• Comply with regulatory reporting through video documentation of farm conditions.
• Study feeding patterns for optimization of feed delivery.
