Traditionally, fish farming operations have been low-budget endeavors. With the introduction of modern management techniques, new technologies have gained wide acceptance within the indus- try, thus encouraging investments in robotics. In scientific applications, ROVs are replacing the mundane tasks previously performed by divers, allowing a safer and more cost-effective scientific operation (Figure 21.18).
21.3 Public safety diving
Many of the useful applications for this technology are in the field of public safety diving. Several public safety divers (PSDs) are killed each year in the line of duty due to the hazardous environ- ments in which they operate. Unmanned searches, as well as electronic search techniques, have the ability to significantly increase the efficiency of the search and lower the risk to field operations
