EDINGTON CHARITY OF THE MONTH – DOROTHY HOUSE
Dorothy House provide compassionate care and support for people in our community with a life-
limiting illness. It focuses on quality of life, so patients can live well and die well. Their multi- disciplinary approach means that their clinical teams provide an individually tailored package of care to enable patients to live well and die well. They give care and support to patients and their families in Bath and north east Somerset and parts of Wiltshire and Somerset, whenever they need it; at home, in the hospice, or at one of their outreach centres. They respect the uniqueness of each patient and their family, and empower them to choose the type of care they receive.
The charity is passionate about building strong partnerships with health and social care professionals. Their team of experienced, registered Dorothy House Nurse Specialists make it possible for patients to be cared for at home. They’re often people’s first point of contact with Dorothy House. They give advice and support to patients at home, in community hospitals and in residential and nursing homes.
They also support the Royal United Hospital (RUH) in Bath to provide care to facilitate earlier discharge from hospital. Where they can, they increase their level of care in the last few days of a patient’s life so they can remain at home if they wish. Their Day Patient Unit in Winsley gives patients a chance to meet once a week to share experiences in a safe and friendly environment. The sessions help patients lead as full and independent a life as possible, and to belong to a group.
Volunteers are at the heart of everything at Dorothy House. They were founded by a small group of volunteers almost 40 years ago and today, more than 1,200 people give their time so that they can continue to offer free care to people with life limiting illness, and their families. Most of their 340 hospice and outreach volunteers directly support patients, carers or families. They work at their main hospice site in Winsley near Bradford on Avon, at their Outreach Centres in Peasedown St John and Trowbridge, or out in the community.
More than 700 people volunteer in their 28 shops and resorting centre. Their efforts make a huge difference – the shops provide them with over 10% of our income. There are plenty of different roles available, in a range of locations. So why not consider joining their team? It’s a great chance to gain new skills and meet new people.
