INTRODUCTION TO THE EXHIBITION
A Sense of Place is our third triennial London Exhibition and continues to build on the artistic talents and strengths of St Mary’s Calne.
We are proud to showcase the best of our Scholars, senior and junior girls’ work alongside our talented alumnae, parents and staff.
The breadth of skill, effort and flair on display is a range of 2-D, 3-D and now 4-D media, reflecting the rigour, quality and the future focus on emerging art.
Featured works include ‘The Pits’, by Alice Wade, winner of Saatchi’s Digital Prize and Royal Academy Online Exhibitor, and ‘Gourd’ by Clemency Fisher, winner of the Royal Academy ‘Young Art’ GCSE Painting Prize. Other notable pieces include work by Isabella Depla and Lucy Bradley, both long-listed by The Arts Society, in their selection for the Royal Society of British Artists National Scholars Initiative.
We are keen to engender and promote the creative talents of our girls and support them in their wish to pursue their intellectual and practical paths of enquiry – encouraging them to become confident, curious and creative in response to the world around them. We recognise the ability to take risks without fear of failure: knowing that pursuing an individual path of enquiry is a major source of fulfilment and thereby deeply satisfying.
The involvement of our alumnae, some of whom contribute professional experience beyond St Mary’s, is of great importance. We are grateful for their support and influence in addition to building links with national bodies such as the National Society for Education in Art and Design and The Arts Society. We would also like to thank Mall Galleries for welcoming us to such a prestigious venue and offering such an amazing environment in which to exhibit.
In light of the national focus for Art, Craft and Design that has been subject to much controversy as a consequence of government education reform, we are privileged that St Mary’s Calne secures a holistic, student-centred approach that recognises the potential of our young women in all fields of their creative life.
We extend our thanks for your support and hope that you enjoy the showcase on display.
