The Effects of Being a Police Officer

The work of a Police Officer has many effects in the society, specaillity in their families. The
demands of fitting into a particular department's culture make it hard for officers to balance
work and family commitments. One important effect an officer is that may still feel the need
to exert control at home and the long hours diffult the balancing a law enforcement career's
demands with parental responsibilities forced officers to miss birthdays, school activities and
other significant milestones of family life.

An another effect is that the social insolation is a common outgrowth of police work. Police
officers most commonly associate with other officers, because they feel uncomfortable in non-
law enforcement settings. Officers' spouses and children are bound by similar unspoken rules.
Over time, officers adopting such attitudes also develop an "us against them" mentality in
dealing with the public.ocial isolation is a common outgrowth of police work.

A third outcome of a Police officer dealing with human misery on a regular basis also leads
officers to shut down emotions, which negatively affects the public's view of them. In
consequence public perceptions are skewed by unrealistic film and TV portrayals of police
work and police officers are viewed differently than other professionals because of their
                  authority role.
