 North Carolina Heads West
The North Carolina Society of the Cincinnati
During the last weekend in April, members of the North Carolina Society struck out for the far reaches of the western North Carolina frontier for a memorable meeting in the Blue Ridge Mountain city of Asheville. An exuberant crowd of more than 240 members, spouses and guests enjoyed a series of activities organized under the watchful stewardship of Marshal George Lennon. Never let it be said that our society is Eastern North Carolina-centric!
Events began with a dinner for the standing committee on Thursday night at the Governor’s Western Residence on a bluff near the outskirts of the city, where attendees were greeted with spectacular views.
The next day, attendees enjoyed cocktails, an informal barbecue, and music by the Black Mountain City Limits bluegrass band at the hotel.
President Tony Maupin opened the spring business meeting of our Society in the Episcopal Cathedral of All Souls on Saturday. Among other important business, five new hereditary members and six new successors were elected to membership and a resolution of appreciation was presented to member Bruce Jackson for his efforts to publish our society news magazine, Continental Lines. Attendees adjourned to the Deerpark Restaurant on the Biltmore Estate for the traditional Saturday bloody mary reception, followed by a seated luncheon.
Members, spouses and guests then participated in the highlight of the weekend: guided tours of the incomparable Biltmore House and grounds. Through special arrangements we had access to the house, gardens, and winery. Events were capped on Saturday night by a formal dinner dance at the historic Biltmore Forest Country Club, with music by the Second Nature Band.
