Greetings from
The Old Line State!
The Society of the Cincinnati of Maryland
Maryland’s 237th Annual Meeting was
held February 16 at Anderson House. At the following white tie dinner and dance we inducted nine new members, five of whom represent propositi never previously represented.
At our April 16 standing committee meeting held at the Maryland Club in Baltimore, incoming President Tom Crocker presented outgoing President George Rich with an American officer's saber dating from 1780- 1812 in appreciation of his outstanding service to the Maryland Society.
In August, the Maryland Society participated in a ceremony in Brooklyn commemorating the stand made by the Maryland 400 at the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776. In this battle
the outnumbered soldiers of Maryland repeatedly charged British forces, allowing General Washington's army to retreat at a critical moment but at a cost of horrific casualties. A grateful Washington subsequently dubbed the Maryland troops his “Old Line.” This is how Maryland earned the nickname “The Old Line State.”
Last fall we named Gardiner Pearson and Tim Dioquino as co-chairmen of a new Maryland 400 Committee to support efforts to research and commemorate this brave stand. We are pleased to report that as a first step at its April 16 meeting, the standing
