Graduation Day at The Men’s Centre in Ashford
 Update from the Men’s Centre
With the relaxing of restrictions, this
year allowed us to welcome back some
of the much-needed input from external professionals, visitors and volunteers. A major component of what goes on within the students’ experience is this interaction with individuals outside of the centre staff team. It is great to feel a real buzz about the place again.
One of the volunteer teams came and lifted
the spirits of our students through spending valuable time with them and taking them out to adventure centres such as ‘Squirrel’s Scramble’. The staff, students and visitors spent days scurrying around in trees via ropes, ladders and zip lines. It really was well appreciated by all.
Barbecues throughout the year with our
staff, students and volunteers brought a real sense of companionship, encouragement and recovery for everyone. A visit from the Christian Motorcyclists Association of Ireland was well received by our residents as they spent time sharing food and chatting about the many bikes they arrived on.
Over the last year, we spent much time improving the quality of services by implementing new evidence-based groups and recovery classes. We have also continued to partner with IT Carlow, now known as SETU, by delivering Level 6 qualifications for our students. These educational opportunities are often a great starting or returning point for many.
A new Outdoor Behavioural Therapy course was designed to help with mental health and wellbeing. This course includes teaching sessions on-site and then practical sessions orienteering outside with overnight camping involved. All participants found it challenging and stimulating with regard to new life experiences.
Our graduation ceremony took place at the official opening of The Granary, with TD Simon Harris and the Croatian Ambassador, Davor Vidis, in attendance. This also marked the official launch of our new educational initiative with SETU.
There is so much that goes on within the centre but writing space is limited. We appreciate all your prayers and contributions and hope you have a great Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
